Description
Tsurube-Otoshi manifests as a colossal floating head, bald and bearded in dark hair, with exaggerated facial features: brown irises enclosing minute pupils, prominent buck teeth, bushy eyebrows, and thick lips. Occasionally in manga, miniature legs emerge from his beard when he moves.

Throughout the *GeGeGe no Kitarō* anime adaptations, his role transformed:
- The 1971 series featured him as a resident of the Yōkai Apartments in episode 25, "The Phantom Train."
- After appearing in the 1985 series' ending credits, he debuted substantially in episode 35, "Millennial Kingdom of Yōkai Akashita."
- The 2007 series positioned him as a permanent fixture in Yōkai Yokochō, operating a convenience store. Episode 40, "Big Fever! Kitarō Goodies," highlighted his rivalry with Azuki-Arai over snack sales.
- In the sixth anime (2018–2020), he joined communal activities like a three-legged race with Nurikabe in the opening. Later, he initially supported expelling the human Agnès from the forest but reconsidered after Medama-Oyaji and Kitarō warned of Backbeard's invasion consequences.

His documented abilities include Bucket Drops, summoning rope-attached buckets from ceilings to crush opponents, and Prehensile Mustache, manipulating his beard as makeshift limbs to carry objects.

Japanese folklore describes Tsurube-Otoshi lurking in treetops to plummet onto humans. Regional depictions vary: it may resemble an oni, tengu, severed head, or fireball. Its name evokes a well bucket's swift fall. Some legends claim it drops actual buckets to capture prey, occasionally taunting victims with phrases like "has your night work ended? How 'bout let's drop a bucket, gii-gii" before attacking.

Folklore notes contrasts: Kansai portrays it as solitary and gigantic, while Tohoku depicts smaller, group-oriented entities. Parallel yōkai include Yamagata's *nabe-oroshi* (pan-dropper) and Aomori's *ijiko* (fire-dropper). Historically, it may derive from Toriyama Sekien's 1776 *Gazu Hyakki Yagyō*, which illustrated the fireball *tsurubebi*. Its identity solidified as a head-dropping yōkai during the Shōwa period.
