Description
Neko-Musume, known as the Cat Girl, is a half-yōkai who lives in GeGeGe Forest and is a core member of the Kitarō family. She was born to a human and a yōkai, making her a hanyō like Nezumi-Otoko, though this origin is rarely highlighted in stories. In the film Gegege no Kitarō: Yōkai Tokkyū! Maboroshi no Kisha, she appears as a young woman with short purple hair tied in a bun with a large red bow, wearing a white blouse and a red or pink jumper skirt. Her everyday appearance is human, but when she becomes angry, excited, or when she sees fish or rats, her eyes flash gold, her mouth splits wide, and sharp fangs and claws emerge, revealing her feral cat-monster form.
Her personality is generally quiet and gentle, but she has a strong temper that flares up quickly, especially when dealing with Nezumi-Otoko’s misdeeds. She often acts as the group’s enforcer, using her claws to scratch him severely, and he fears her as his natural enemy. Despite this, she can be playful and caring, as shown when she carefully sews up Ittan-Momen’s torn body after a battle. She harbors a deep romantic affection for Kitarō, frequently blushing around him and trying to help him in any way she can, although Kitarō usually treats her as a close friend.
Her primary motivation is to protect her friends and support Kitarō in maintaining peace between the human and yōkai worlds. She is driven by loyalty and a desire to be useful, often putting herself in danger without hesitation. In the film, her role is that of a brave, resourceful fighter. When Kitarō is turned into yōkai coal by the Western vampire, she does not give up. Along with Medama-Oyaji, she deduces that the phantom train can travel anywhere, including through time, and she helps set the train’s course to the past, which reverses Kitarō’s transformation and allows him to return. In battle, she uses her agility and claws to attack the werewolf and Frankenstein, and she throws sand to blind the werewolf and Frankenstein, giving her allies an opening. She is also resilient, recovering from being cut apart by the witch’s claws when Ittan-Momen sews her back together.
Key relationships include her deep bond with Kitarō, whom she admires and wishes to impress. She has a hostile but occasionally cooperative relationship with Nezumi-Otoko, often punishing him for his greed yet sometimes teaming up with him. She respects Medama-Oyaji and works closely with him during the crisis. She also fights alongside Sunakake-Babaa, Konaki-Jijii, and Ittan-Momen, showing teamwork and mutual support.
Her character development in the film shows her growing from a somewhat impulsive sidekick into a decisive and clever ally. She takes the lead in solving the problem of the coal transformation, demonstrating quick thinking and bravery. Her abilities are centered on her cat-like traits: enhanced speed and reflexes, sharp claws and fangs for combat, and a sand-throwing technique that blinds opponents. She also possesses practical skills such as sewing, which she uses to repair Ittan-Momen. While she lacks the raw power of some other yōkai, her determination and heart make her an indispensable member of the team.
