Description
Yobuko, a specific yōkai linked to Mt. Oguro, serves the powerful entity Yamata-no-Orochi and exists in multiple forms across adaptations. Typically depicted with legs merged into a tree stump, resulting in restricted mobility, Yobuko lures humans or other yōkai to Orochi. Its core ability involves body stealing: Yobuko switches bodies with individuals who make wishes to Orochi, trapping them in its original form while assuming their identity. For example, in the 2018 anime, the human Fujio Saitō, driven by greed and selfish wishes, becomes the new Yobuko trapped at Mt. Oguro after his body is stolen. A distinct variant called the Fake Yobuko appears in the 1985 anime adaptation, possessing shape-shifting capabilities to extend its lower body for offense, differing from the typical immobilized form. Yobuko's role consistently centers on enforcing the consequences of exploiting Orochi's wish-granting powers, acting as a permanent guardian or attendant for the entity after body-switching events and serving as a narrative device highlighting themes of greed and retribution.
