Description
Lunamaria Hawke serves as a Coordinator and elite mobile suit pilot aboard the ZAFT battleship Minerva. She attended the ZAFT military academy with her younger sister Meyrin Hawke, Shinn Asuka, Rey Za Burrel, and others. Initially piloting a red ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior customized for long-range combat, she transitions to the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam after her ZAKU's destruction. Her appearance features short reddish-violet hair with an ahoge (cowlick), indigo eyes, and a customized ZAFT red uniform with a miniskirt.

Her personality blends cheerfulness and sociability with stubbornness and occasional jealousy. She displays strong loyalty, especially protective concern for Meyrin. Lunamaria respects authority and follows orders, even when conflicted, such as during her mission to spy on Athrun Zala meeting the Archangel crew. This mission reveals Meer Campbell impersonating Lacus Clyne and the real Lacus's alliance with the Archangel, information she keeps confidential per orders. Though competent in mobile suit combat, she initially struggles with handheld firearms due to a habitual wrist twitch when pulling the trigger, later improving after identifying the issue. She also possesses helicopter piloting and intelligence gathering skills.

Lunamaria participates in key Second Alliance-PLANT War conflicts, including defending Armory One against new mobile suit theft and battling Earth Alliance forces and Extended pilots like Stella Loussier. She encounters Athrun Zala (alias "Alex Dino") early on, developing an admiration that occasionally manifests as a crush. Her ZAKU Warrior sustains critical damage during the Battle of Crete, causing severe injuries that sideline her. After recovering at Gibraltar, she pilots the Impulse Gundam when Shinn Asuka transitions to the Destiny Gundam.

A significant emotional turning point occurs when ZAFT officials inform her of Meyrin's apparent betrayal and escape with Athrun, followed by Shinn's revelation that he destroyed their escape craft under orders. Lunamaria reacts with shock and denial but ultimately forgives Shinn, recognizing his adherence to commands and directing blame toward LOGOS. This shared trauma catalyzes a romantic relationship between them, with Lunamaria providing Shinn emotional support. This relationship development receives expanded emphasis in the *Special Edition* compilation films, framed through Athrun's perspective and smoothing Shinn's transition from his prior attachment to Stella.

During Operation: Fury, Lunamaria combats Orb forces and pursues a fleeing shuttle carrying LOGOS leader Lord Djibril but fails to intercept it. She later discovers both Athrun and Meyrin alive aboard the Archangel during the Battle of Messiah. Confronting Athrun in the Impulse, she blames him for taking Meyrin away, resulting in a battle where Athrun damages her mobile suit. Shinn intervenes to protect her, leading to a three-way clash where Lunamaria attempts to stop their fighting. Athrun disables Shinn's Destiny, stranding both Shinn and Lunamaria on the moon's surface; she comforts him as they witness Messiah's destruction. Rescued by Athrun in the Infinite Justice, she appears alongside Shinn, Meyrin, Athrun, Kira Yamato, and Lacus Clyne in Orb during the "Final Plus" epilogue, paying respects to Shinn's deceased family.

Post-war, Lunamaria joins COMPASS alongside Shinn, serving aboard the Millennium. During COMPASS operations against Blue Cosmos remnants, she pilots the Impulse before transitioning to the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II. In the climatic battle against the Kingdom of Foundation, she shoots down a nuclear missile targeting the capital and later duels Agnes Gibenrath in Artemis, prevailing.
