Forced to evacuate, he witnessed their deaths in mobile suit crossfire, an event causing lasting trauma. This tragedy ignited profound resentment towards Orb's leadership for failing civilians and deep hatred for those starting wars. Captain Todaka aided his relocation to PLANTs, where he entered ZAFT's military academy. Despite initial academic difficulties, he graduated with Red Uniform honors.
Assigned to pilot the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam aboard the Minerva, Shinn rapidly developed exceptional combat skills during early engagements like the Armory One incident. His fighting style evolved into a versatile "one-man army" approach, excelling at close, medium, and long ranges. He possessed the SEED factor, activating SEED Mode by channeling anger from personal loss, which heightened his aggression and prowess. In the OVA *Final Plus: The Chosen Future*, Shinn visited Orb's memorial to honor his family, encountering Kira Yamato. Accepting Kira's offer to collaborate symbolized his release from hatred and commitment to peace. By C.E. 75, in *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom*, he joined the peacekeeping group Compass under Kira, piloting the STTS-808 Immortal Justice Gundam initially.
