Description
Benkei Musashibou pilots Getter-3 as part of the Getter Team, embodying a hedonistic and gluttonous nature within his persona as an apprentice warrior-monk. This characterization honors previous Getter-3 pilots across the franchise, specifically blending traits of earlier characters named Benkei and Musashi. His name directly references the historical Japanese warrior-monk Saitō Musashibō Benkei, famed for extraordinary strength and loyalty in the Heian period.
Recruited by Dr. Saotome during the Oni attacks, Benkei joins street fighter Ryoma Nagare and terrorist Hayato Jin as Getter Robo pilots. His combat skills partially stem from his warrior-monk background—a tradition of historical warrior monks (sohei) who wielded weapons like the naginata and participated in feudal conflicts.
Benkei operates the Bear Machine, which combines to form Getter-3. His fighting style includes executing the signature "Daisetsuzan Oroshi" (Great Snow Mountain Avalanche) attack, a technique carried over from previous namesake Getter-3 pilots, cementing his place in their lineage. Professor Saotome initially pilots the Bear Machine before Benkei permanently takes the controls.
The team faces Oni manifestations linked to antagonist Abe no Seimei, culminating in a temporal displacement that plunges them into the Heian era. There, Benkei interacts with Minamoto no Raiko—the legendary warrior whose sword he possesses in the present. This encounter forges a link between Benkei and Japan's feudal past before Seimei's initial defeat.
Returning to the present three years after their disappearance, Benkei continues fighting alongside the team against Seimei's revived Oni form and subsequent threats. The conflict escalates with the emergence of the Four Heavenly Kings, entities targeting Getter Robo as a planetary threat. Benkei battles these deities in subspace. The Getter Emperor's appearance during this conflict influences Ryoma's departure, creating narrative divergence regarding Benkei's ultimate fate.
