Description
Sapphire enters the world in the Kingdom of Silverland bearing both a blue boy's heart and a pink girl's heart. This duality stems from a celestial mishap: the trainee angel Tink mistakenly bestows two hearts during the heavenly gender assignment process. Consequently, Sapphire naturally embodies masculine traits like physical bravery and swordsmanship alongside feminine qualities such as empathy and grace.

Facing succession laws barring female rulers, the King announces Sapphire's birth as male to thwart the villainous Duke Duralumin's ambitions. Raised publicly as Prince Sapphire, she trains in combat and horsemanship while secretly learning etiquette and feminine arts. To navigate her dual nature and societal constraints, Sapphire adopts three identities: the public Prince Sapphire, the masked vigilante Phantom Knight fighting injustice, and occasionally, a princess persona using a blonde wig to engage her love interest, Prince Franz Charming of Goldland.

Franz perceives these identities as distinct: he befriends the prince, romantically pursues the princess, and sees the Phantom Knight as a rival. Their relationship unfolds amidst political turmoil driven by Duke Duralumin and Baron Nylon, who repeatedly attempt to expose Sapphire's biological sex to disinherit her. Threats escalate when the fascist X-Union, led by Mr. X, invades Silverland, culminating in a battle where Sapphire wields magical artifacts to defend her kingdom and confront Mr. X directly.

Sapphire's development involves allies like Tink, who remains on Earth as her companion after failing to retrieve the extra heart, and adversaries like the devil Mephisto, who covets her girl's heart for his daughter Hecate. After reclaiming her throne and marrying Franz, Sapphire appears as a mother of twins in the sequel *The Twin Knights*, facing new challenges as ruler.

Beyond her home series, Sapphire appears in other Tezuka narratives via the "Star System." In the 1980 *Astro Boy* episode "The Time Machine," she is a 15th-century prince saved by Black Jack's surgery, later revealing her true gender. In the *Black Jack* chapter "The Heroine of the Tunnel," she sacrifices her life as a kindergarten teacher protecting students in a bus accident. Minor roles include a scientist in the 2003 *Astro Boy* episode "Astro Vs. Atlas" and a reporter in the *Ambassador Magma* OVA.

Physically, Sapphire has short curly brown or black hair, often styled with upward tips, and large, star-patterned eyes influential in shōjo manga design. Her attire shifts with her roles: princely formal wear, Zorro-inspired mask and fencing gear as the Phantom Knight, and ornate gowns with a blonde wig as the princess.
