Description
Shimotsuki Ryuma, a legendary samurai of Wano Country’s Shimotsuki Family, thrived centuries ago during the prosperous "Country of Gold" era. Renowned as the "Sword God," his unmatched skill with the blade and the slaying of a dragon solidified his mythic status. This feat birthed Shusui, a black blade ranked among the 21 Great Grade Swords and later enshrined as a Wano national treasure.

Born into a lineage of master swordsmen, Ryuma wandered as a warrior bound by an unyielding code of honor. He prioritized defending the vulnerable over personal acclaim, yet his rigid principles compelled him to duel anyone whose sheath accidentally brushed his own—a quirk that sparked frequent, avoidable clashes. Despite his fearsome reputation, he grappled with destitution, often enduring days without food.

Centuries posthumously, his corpse and sword were stolen by Gecko Moria, who reanimated him as a zombie on Thriller Bark using Brook’s shadow. This lifeless shell wielded Ryuma’s legendary swordsmanship but none of his spirit. Roronoa Zoro ultimately vanquished the zombie, claiming Shusui and intertwining their destinies through shared ancestry.

In *Monsters*, Ryuma crossed paths with Flare, a waitress whose village fell to a dragon’s rampage. Moved by her offer of food, he swore to shield her, colliding with Cyrano, a cunning swordsman manipulating dragon attacks. Restraint cost Ryuma their initial duel, but he later unmasked Cyrano’s schemes and felled him with a single strike. He then confronted the summoned dragon, severing its head to honor his vow as Flare’s protector.

Those he saved hailed him as "King," a title reflecting his embodiment of the "Warrior’s Soul," though he remained oblivious to the epithet. His unassuming nature contrasted this reverence. His appearance subtly mirrored both pre- and post-timeskip iterations of Zoro, visually reinforcing their bloodline’s legacy.

Ryuma’s influence persisted through Shusui and his indelible mark on Wano’s history. Mastery of advanced Armament Haki (Ryuo) enabled him to forge a black blade, underscoring his peerless prowess. His exploits in *Monsters* and canonical ties to *One Piece* via Thriller Bark etched him as a cornerstone of the series’ lore.
