Description
Eduard is one of the five noble students selected for the prestigious Strahl class at the Rozenstolz academy in the kingdom of Kuchen. His role as a Strahl candidate places him on a path to potentially become an advisor to the king, a position for which he and his classmates are being groomed. He is initially introduced as a young man who loves sports and music, and he carries himself with a bright, cheerful smile that is his most outward characteristic. This friendly disposition, however, masks a deeply troubled and complicated family history.

Eduard is the illegitimate son of Viscount Braunschweig and a peasant woman. Born as the result of this union, he faces intense rejection and cruelty from his stepmother, the Countess, who despises him for being the rightful heir to the Braunschweig title and views his very existence as a threat. The Countess’s animosity is not passive; she actively plots against Eduard, going so far as to orchestrate a trap to eliminate him. This plot involved a young girl, Elaine, who was manipulated into luring him out of the academy under false pretenses. His home life is further complicated by the fact that his younger sister, Erika, was given away for adoption by his father in an attempt to protect her from the Countess’s hatred, leaving Eduard deeply determined to one day find her. Despite this painful upbringing, he continues to love his father and half-sisters, and part of him even seems to long for the approval of his abusive stepmother, a tragic aspect of his character that highlights his capacity for forgiveness and his deep-seated need for family.

Within the social hierarchy of Rozenstolz academy, Eduard’s status as an illegitimate child makes him a target for scorn and ridicule from other students. The person who stands as his most steadfast ally and protector is his childhood friend, Orpherus. Their bond is exceptionally deep, characterized by a near-telepathic understanding and an unshakeable loyalty that forms the emotional core of Eduard’s life. Eduard follows Orpherus without question, serving as his most loyal supporter and confidant. This unwavering devotion, while a testament to their friendship, also defines much of his role in the story; he is not an independent political ideologue like some of the other Strahl candidates, but rather a crucial emotional anchor for Orpherus, the group’s idealistic leader. His actions are consistently motivated by a desire to protect those he cares about, especially Orpherus, and to overcome the machinations of figures like the headmaster, who actively seeks to expel students like him.

Throughout the series, Eduard is forced to confront the threats posed by his stepmother and other corrupt individuals both inside and outside the academy. These experiences, rather than breaking him, reinforce his resilience. He remains a kind and strong individual, known for being exceptionally realistic about his feelings; he does not hide his pain or his joy, making him one of the more grounded and human characters in the narrative. Outside of his loyalty and athleticism, he possesses a notable artistic ability: he is a talented pianist, and his music is a form of quiet, personal expression that contrasts with his otherwise energetic public persona. This combination of a painful past, a cheerful demeanor, a deep loyalty to a single friend, and a hidden artistic talent defines Eduard as a character whose personal struggles are as central to the political drama of Kuchen as the ambitions of his noble peers.
