Description
Mishou Mai emerges as a central figure across multiple Pretty Cure narratives, evolving from her middle school days into adulthood. Her journey originates at the Sky Tree, where a childhood encounter with Hyuuga Saki revealed mysterious lights—later known as the fairies Flappy and Choppy. Five years later, Mai returned to town as a transfer student at Yuunagi Middle School. Reuniting with Saki amid peril to their fairy partners, Mai forged a bond with Choppy, the Bird-themed Mix Commune, gaining the power to become Cure Egret.
Cure Egret, designated "The Glittering Silvery Wing," channels sky and avian powers. Her form showcases a beige and cream costume adorned with featherlike frills and a teal curved heart symbol, emphasizing aerial agility and speed. Alongside Cure Bloom (Saki), she executed joint attacks like Twin Stream Splash, later upgrading to Spiral Heart Splash using Spiral Rings bestowed by spirits Moop and Foop.
A critical event saw Flappy and Choppy severely injured. Healed and enhanced into Crystal Communes by Moop and Foop, they unlocked Mai's second form: Cure Windy, "The Scented Wind on the Earth." This incarnation shifted her theme from sky to earth and wind, featuring a light blue and pink costume with elongated, wind-swept motifs. Mai retained the ability to shift between Cure Egret and Cure Windy, each representing distinct aspects of her power. Cure Windy engaged primarily in grounded combat, contrasting Cure Egret's aerial focus, wielding new techniques like Spiral Star Splash.
During the final battle against Goyan, Cure Windy temporarily empowered former antagonist Kaoru before reverting to Cure Egret. In this original form, Mai and Saki unleashed their ultimate attack, Spiral Heart Splash Star, defeating Goyan.
Years later as an adult, Mai worked as a graphic designer at a major advertising agency. She navigated romantic relationship challenges and a breakup, supported by Saki. When threats from Shadows reemerged, Mai chose to become Pretty Cure again alongside Saki, fully aware of the risks tied to Time Flowers. This resolve strengthened after reuniting with allies Michiru and Kaoru, revealed as Dark Night Light. Her adult appearance featured shorter hair in a neat ponytail, often accented by wing-shaped earrings or a white wing necklace, echoing her Cure legacy.
Mai embodies calmness, perceptiveness, and serenity. Academically gifted in art and science—interests influenced by her astronomer and archaeologist parents—she notices subtle details others miss. As Cure Egret and Cure Windy, she demonstrates determination and profound teamwork, especially with Saki. Their bond, forged in childhood and cemented through shared battles, remains central to her character arc.
Her name, Mishou Mai (美翔 舞), holds thematic weight: "Mishou" blends "beauty" (美) and "soar/fly" (翔), while "Mai" translates as "dance." This directly reflects her dual Cure identities—Cure Egret's avian flight and Cure Windy's wind-borne movement.
