TV Special
Description
Akiko Minase is the mother of Nayuki Minase and aunt to Yuichi Aizawa. She lives in a snowy northern Japanese town and manages the household where Yuichi stays after his seven-year absence. She possesses light skin, purple-tinged blue hair typically styled in a long braid over her right shoulder, and light blue eyes. She stands 165 cm tall and weighs 50 kg, often wearing a light pink cardigan over a white long-sleeved shirt.
Her personality is defined by kindness, compassion, and a consistently calm demeanor. She answers questions or requests rapidly, rarely showing anger or sternness. Highly proficient in household management, especially cooking, she is also known for her infamous homemade "special jam" which others find unpalatable despite her pride in it. She readily extends care to those in need, treating individuals like Makoto Sawatari and Ayu Tsukimiya as family when they require shelter. Her tendency to accept supernatural events and offer moral support suggests an underlying awareness of the town's mystical elements.
Akiko raised Nayuki alone after Nayuki's father left when Nayuki was very young, resulting in no paternal presence. This experience fostered a close, conflict-free bond with her daughter, emphasizing her role as the family's emotional and practical anchor.
During the main storyline, Akiko provides indirect support to character arcs. She shelters Makoto without hesitation after Yuichi brings her home and later invites Ayu to stay upon learning Ayu's parents are away. Her involvement becomes central to Nayuki's arc when she suffers critical injuries in a car accident while returning from buying a strawberry cake for Nayuki. This incident hospitalizes Akiko and triggers Nayuki's severe depression. Akiko's eventual recovery coincides with the resolution of the story's emotional conflicts.
In the OVA "Kanon Kazahana," set during spring after the main events, Akiko has fully recovered and resumed her life. The household returns to normalcy, with characters like Mai Kawasumi graduating. The OVA focuses on Mishio Amano visiting Makoto’s birthplace and witnessing a miracle.
Beyond the primary narrative, Akiko appears as a playable fighter in the spin-off game *Eternal Fighter Zero*. Her moveset incorporates household items like brooms, kitchen knives, and a fire extinguisher, emphasizing aerial agility with multiple air dashes and multi-hit jumping attacks. One special move cycles through projectiles such as eggs, carrots, and sardines shot from a refrigerator. Her "Final Memory" super move references her infamous jam as a powerful grappling attack. The game also includes mechanics like cursing opponents to restrict their abilities.
Her name "Akiko" combines "autumn" (秋) and "child" (子), aligning with her calm demeanor and September 23rd birthday, while "Minase" means "water" (水) and "swift current" (瀬).
