Description
Mai Mishou, also known as Cure Egret, is a central character who originates from the Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star series and appears in the film Precure All Stars DX: Minna Tomodachi—Kiseki no Zenin Daishūgō. Her journey begins when she moves to Yuunagi Town as a second-year middle school student, leading to a significant reunion with her childhood friend, Saki Hyuuga. This reunion takes place at a place called the Sky Tree, a location tied to their first meeting five years prior when they both witnessed mysterious lights. This meeting sets the stage for their roles as legendary warriors, as they gain the power to transform into Pretty Cure to protect the fairy spirits Flappy and Choppy from the forces of Dark Fall.
Mai possesses a calm, reserved, and highly observant personality, which complements her partner Saki's more athletic and energetic nature. She is an exceptional student with a strong passion for both art and science, interests that are influenced by her family background; her father is an astronomer, her mother is an archaeologist, and her family lives in an observatory. This keen eye for detail often leads her to sketch meaningful scenes and moments in a sketchbook, capturing the beauty she sees in the world around her. Her motivations as a hero stem from a deep-seated desire to protect others, a trait first awakened when she defended the fairies from an enemy attack. Throughout her series, she consistently demonstrates empathy and resolve, most notably when she befriends and aids in the redemption of Michiru and Kaoru Kiryuu, two girls who initially serve the enemy group Dark Fall.
In the story, Mai’s primary role is as one half of the Pretty Cure duo, partnered with Saki. As Cure Egret, she is introduced as the sparkling silver wing and wields powers derived from the sky and birds, specializing in high-speed aerial combat and creating energy shields. Her key relationships are central to her development. The bond with her partner Saki is profound, rooted in their childhood encounter and strengthened through their shared battles and mutual support. She also shares a deep connection with her fairy partner, Choppy, who enables her transformations. Her determination to save Michiru and Kaoru, despite the risks, highlights her growth into a compassionate and determined individual.
Later in her original series, Mai gains the ability to transform into a secondary form called Cure Windy, introduced as the scented wind across the Earth. This form grants her command over wind-based powers and more grounded combat tactics. She can freely switch between her Cure Egret and Cure Windy forms, each offering distinct advantages in battle. As a warrior, her notable abilities are often executed in tandem with her partner and include collaborative attacks such as the Twin Stream Splash and the more powerful Spiral Heart Splash. Her development continues beyond her teenage years, and in later media depicting adulthood, she pursues a career as a graphic designer while still facing personal and supernatural challenges alongside her lifelong friend Saki.
