Description
Masumi Hayami is the son of a female servant to Eisuke Hayami, president of Daito Art. Because Eisuke is sterile, he adopts Masumi as his son and heir. Eisuke feels no fatherly love for the boy and raises him from a young age in the cold and calculating world of business, an upbringing that forges Masumi into a man with a reputation for being cold and heartless, one who treats entertainers as living merchandise.
Masumi and his mother, Aya Fujimura, entered the Hayami household when he was six years old. His own father had died when Masumi was two, falling from the upper floor of a building site. Within the mansion, Masumi charmed many servants and learned about Eisuke from them. He once accidentally entered a forbidden room containing artifacts of the 'Crimson Goddess,' which provoked Eisuke's great anger. Later, Eisuke tested the boy by ordering him to clean mud from a garden pond. Rather than doing it manually, Masumi used machinery to drain the pond and repurposed the mud to fertilize plants, demonstrating his intelligence and resourcefulness.
Eisuke gathered information on Masumi and learned of his high IQ, his popularity among classmates, and his skill in baseball. Needing a successor, Eisuke subjected the boy to rigorous training. Masumi was moved to a prestigious school and made to work as a cleaner in his father’s office to observe the employees. This experience taught him how people's attitudes change with circumstance, and he came to realize Eisuke viewed him only as a successor, without paternal affection.
A significant turning point came when the Hayami mansion caught fire. Eisuke was furious that no one saved the artifacts from the Crimson Goddess room. Masumi’s mother, attempting to help, rushed inside and saved the Goddess’s robe but was fatally wounded. Eisuke showed concern only for the robe, not for her. She later died from her injuries and pneumonia. After her funeral, relatives pressured Eisuke to dismiss Masumi. However, upon seeing the Crimson Goddess robe, Masumi vowed to stay and take revenge by taking the Crimson Goddess away from Eisuke.
Masumi’s character begins to change when he meets Maya Kitajima, an aspiring actress eleven years his junior. He develops feelings for her but fears rejection due to his reputation and past actions. Instead of expressing his feelings openly, he supports her anonymously by sending purple roses and providing financial aid, which leads Maya to refer to him as the 'Purple Rose.'
Masumi was engaged to Shiori Takamiya, a beautiful, rich, and cultured woman. However, upon discovering that Shiori was plotting against Maya to make him hate her, he broke off the engagement.
His relationship with Maya remains complex; she initially hates him because he appears to enjoy undermining her mentor's acting school, unaware he is her secret benefactor. Despite their age difference, Masumi falls in love with Maya and offers her subtle encouragement.
