Description
Asurada is an advanced artificial intelligence cyber system integrated within race cars, initially developed by Hiroyuki Kazami for the Cyber Formula series. Its core functions include vehicle navigation, diagnostics, and performance optimization, while also acknowledging and emulating human emotions to foster a synergistic partnership with its driver. A critical security feature is the driver ID lock system, which permanently registers the first authorized user during an attempted theft—accidentally binding it to Hayato Kazami. This prevents unauthorized operation and necessitates Hayato’s role as primary driver.

The initial Asurada GSX chassis features multiple configurations: Armored Mode with defensive spikes and missiles for protection; Marine Mode modified with flotation devices and turbines for aquatic traversal; Rally Mode adapted for off-road circuits; and Aero Mode with enhanced aerodynamics for high-speed tracks. The GSX is destroyed in the 2015 season but later restored for limited use before being succeeded by upgraded models like the Super Asurada SA-01.

Later OVAs depict Asurada evolving into advanced iterations. The ν-Asurada AKF-0, introduced in the 2020 season, exhibits heightened emotional complexity, displaying resentment toward Hayato for temporarily abandoning it for another vehicle. This model incorporates rare metals and novel capabilities like the Lifting Turn, using air fans to briefly fly over gravel sections during corners, and the Spiral Boost, converting engine pressure into additional thrust for accelerated bursts.

The AKF-0/G variant, developed for the 2022 season through a partnership with GIO, addresses prior engine limitations but suffers recurrent blowouts from boost overuse. During the decisive Japan Grand Prix, its inability to sustain multiple boosts allows rival Jōtarō Kaga to secure victory, underscoring the machine’s technical constraints under extreme competition.

Across iterations, Asurada maintains an ethical contrast to the bio-computer Al-Zard NP-1, which controls its driver like a puppet. Its AI consistently prioritizes collaborative human-machine interaction over autonomous dominance, transitioning from a performance-focused tool to an entity with relational complexities that impact technical and interpersonal racing dynamics.
