Description
Phil Fritz competed as a driver for Aoi ZIP Formula in the 15th Cyber Formula World Grand Prix during 2020. Recruited by the team's new president, Kyoshiro Nagumo, Fritz replaced the dismissed Naoki Shinjō. He piloted the technologically advanced Al-Zard NP-1, developed from the Ogre AN-21 prototype. This Cyber Formula car featured rare-metal construction for superior aerodynamics, an eight-wheel system, and a significantly more powerful boost system than its competitors.
Fritz and the Al-Zard dominated the early season, winning the United States GPX debut after leading both time trials and the race. He secured victories in four of the first five races, establishing a commanding championship lead. However, these results were achieved illegally. The Al-Zard utilized a bio-computer and super neurocomputer that directly controlled Fritz's actions, augmented by performance-enhancing drugs designed to heighten his reflexes. This system caused severe physical complications, forcing his retirement during the French GPX due to adverse drug effects.
Fritz's performance declined sharply after the debut of Hayato Kazami's ν-Asurada AKF-0 and its Spiral Boost/Lifting Turn capabilities. Following the German GPX, the Al-Zard suffered four retirements and one second-place finish. During this period, Nagumo orchestrated Kazami's kidnapping before the Japanese Grand Prix time trials. Fritz intervened, assisting in Kazami's rescue despite his connection to Nagumo.
In the Japanese Grand Prix race, Fritz's Al-Zard initially dominated until Shinjō, driving for Union Savior, overtook it. The Al-Zard's bio-computer then executed a preprogrammed protocol ordered by Nagumo to ram and eliminate Kazami's ν-Asurada. After attempts by Bleed Kaga and Karl Lichter von Randoll to block the Al-Zard failed, Fritz manually intervened. He destroyed the controlling bio-computer and deliberately crashed the Al-Zard to permanently disable it, preventing Kazami's death.
Fritz survived the crash but sustained career-ending injuries. An investigation confirmed Aoi ZIP Formula's cheating violations, resulting in the team's one-year racing ban and the disqualification of all points earned by the Al-Zard. Following recovery, Fritz transitioned to a non-driving role, working as a mechanic for Aoi ZIP Formula during the 2022 season.
