Papa Panda, a male giant panda, resided at a local zoo with his young son, Panny. After escaping, they discovered Mimiko's house near a bamboo grove, offering an ideal habitat and food source. Learning that Mimiko, a young girl temporarily living alone, had no parents, Papa Panda offered to become her father. They formed an unconventional but devoted family unit, with Mimiko acting as a mother figure to Panny, formalized by mutual agreement.
Physically large and round with a distinctive toothy grin, Papa Panda exhibits a gentle, friendly, and protective personality. He readily expresses affection and offers reassuring support to Mimiko and Panny. Despite his kind nature and good intentions, his naivete regarding typical human responsibilities and domestic routines requires adjustments in their new family life. His design and demeanor share notable similarities with Totoro.
When the zookeeper and authorities locate them, demanding their return, Papa Panda faces separation from Mimiko. During a crisis where Panny is endangered near a floodgate, Papa Panda plunges in and rescues him. Following this event, an agreement permits Papa Panda and Panny to reside at the zoo during operational hours but return to live with Mimiko afterward, maintaining their family life.
In the sequel, Papa Panda continues within this family structure. He participates in welcoming a lost baby tiger, Tiny, into their home temporarily. Later, when flooding endangers a circus train carrying Tiny and other animals, Papa Panda joins Mimiko and Panny in a rescue effort. Demonstrating significant physical strength, he successfully stops the runaway train, preventing a crash. Papa Panda, Mimiko, and Panny are hailed as local heroes following this act. His character development centers on his unwavering commitment to his self-defined family, his protective instincts, and his integration into human society under unique circumstances.
