Description
Actarus serves as the name for Duke Fleed in specific international adaptations, notably French-speaking regions. He originates as crown prince of the peaceful planet Fleed. The Vegan Empire, led by King Vega, devastated Fleed following the destruction of their own homeworld due to radioactive Vegatron ore exploitation. Vegan forces annihilated Fleed with Vegatron bombs, slaughtering inhabitants including the royal family and transforming the planet into a toxic wasteland. As the sole known royal survivor, he seized the war robot Grendizer—crafted by Fleedians as their war god's embodiment—and escaped to Earth. After crash-landing near Mount Fuji, scientist Dr. Umon discovered and adopted him, assigning the Earth alias Daisuke Umon. He concealed his identity and Grendizer's existence while working at Makiba Ranch under Danbei Makiba.
Initially rejecting violence due to trauma, he pursued a pacifist life on Earth until Vegan forces scouted the planet. Saving Koji Kabuto from a Vegan assault forced him to reveal his capabilities, reigniting his combat role to prevent Earth sharing Fleed's fate and atoning for his perceived failure. His aversion to war clashed with defensive responsibilities, manifesting as calm reserve punctuated by intense outbursts when confronting Vegan genocide memories or threats to loved ones. Psychological scars included survivor's guilt and recurring breakdowns, worsened by learning Vegan Saucer Beasts harnessed slain Fleedians' consciousness.
Key relationships defined his path: Hikaru Makiba, Danbei's daughter, developed romantic feelings complicated by his duty. He protected her respectfully, and they occasionally fought together as a Battle Couple after she became a pilot. His pre-destruction political engagement to Princess Rubina, King Vega's daughter, resurfaced when she revealed Fleed's recovery from radiation poisoning; her death shielding him from Vegans hardened his resolve against the Empire. Reunited with his younger sister Maria Grace Fleed—another genocide survivor who initially sought revenge under false betrayal accusations—she became a vital ally upon learning his identity.
His arc culminated in leading Earth's defense with Grendizer and Spazer vehicles against King Vega. Victorious over Vega and the Vegan mothership, he and Maria returned to Fleed for reconstruction, bidding Earth companions a tearful farewell. This departure marked his acceptance of royal legacy and closure as a war refugee turned savior. Spin-offs like Grendizer Giga reimagined his role with altered continuity, though core backstory persisted. Crossovers such as Super Robot Wars emphasized his strategic acumen, combat pragmatism, alliances with figures like Rom Stoll, superhuman agility, instant pilot-suit generation, and signature attacks like Double Harken and Antigravitatory Storm. Vegan invasions remained his Berserk Button, often provoking dramatic declarations mid-battle.
Consistent traits included duality of calm introspection and hot-blooded combativeness, a profound bond with nature and pastoral life reflected in ranch work and horsemanship, and recurring motifs of loss and redemption. New continuations like Grendizer U may explore legacy variations.
