TV-Series
Description
Duke Fleed begins as crown prince of Planet Fleed, pledged to marry Princess Rubina of Vega to secure an alliance. His life fractures when trusted ally Cassado betrays him, murdering Duke's parents and framing him for the crime. Consumed by rage, Duke pilots the war robot Grendizer against Cassado, but his volatile emotions trigger a berserk state in the machine. Uncontrollable, Grendizer devastates Fleed, killing civilians and apparently destroying Rubina's ship. Tormented by guilt over the destruction and Rubina's apparent death, Duke flees Fleed in Grendizer, crash-landing on Earth with amnesia.

Rescued by Koji Kabuto and Sayaka Yumi, he lives under the alias Daisuke Umon, working at the Photon Power Laboratory under adoptive father Genzo Umon. His memories resurface upon seeing Mazinger Z, triggering flashbacks of Fleed's fall. Initially, he plans to destroy Grendizer by flying it into the sun, preventing the Vegan Empire from reclaiming it and atoning for his perceived crimes. The Vegan invasion of Earth forces him to reconsider. Koji convinces him to pilot Grendizer again, offering a ring containing a remote-activated bomb as a safeguard against loss of control.

Duke embodies noble idealism and profound guilt. His compassionate nature drives him to forgive even betrayers like Cassado, whom he captures alive instead of executing. This kindness leaves him vulnerable to manipulation, as enemies exploit his willingness to offer second chances. The trauma of causing Fleed's destruction manifests as deep self-loathing and a persistent fear of his Superpowered Evil Side—a berserk state triggered by intense negative emotions that amplifies Grendizer's destructive capabilities to universal levels. Despite this, he remains committed to protecting Earth and redeeming his past.

His relationships shape his development. Fiancée Rubina survived Grendizer's rampage but became a Vegan commander. Duke's enduring love for her fuels his desire to prove his innocence. Their reunion is complicated by Teronna, Rubina's twin sister and Duke's childhood friend. Teronna, secretly in love with him, initially views him as a traitor for Fleed's destruction. A case of mistaken identity leads Duke into a symbolic marriage bond with Teronna instead of Rubina, straining his ties to both sisters. This love triangle exacerbates his turmoil, especially after Rubina seemingly sacrifices herself for him.

Other key bonds include his friendship with Koji, who provides unwavering support despite Duke's guilt. Duke relies on Koji to activate the ring bomb if he berserks again. Naida, another Fleed survivor, initially seeks vengeance against Duke for her brother Sirius's death during Grendizer's rampage. Brainwashed by Vega, she stabs Duke but ultimately sacrifices herself to save him, revealing Rubina's survival with her dying breath. Maria, Duke's younger sister, reunites with him on Earth after believing him dead. Their shared grief over Fleed strengthens their bond, and she joins his fight against Vega.

As a Starker Knight, Duke possesses enhanced physical abilities: agility, rapid healing, and space survivability without life support. His physiology lets him generate a protective pilot suit instinctively. He is an exceptional swordsman and mecha pilot, with Grendizer responding only to those possessing the GN Gene unique to Starker Knights. Grendizer wields weapons like Double Harken blades, Screw Crusher Punch, and Anti-Gravity Storm beam. Its energy output equals a star, enabling planet-destroying power during Duke's berserk episodes. The robot can fuse with Spazer units (Drill, Marine, Double) for enhanced combat or atmospheric flight and later combine with Mazinger X to form "Cosmo Special."

Across the series, Duke evolves from a guilt-ridden amnesiac to a reluctant Earth protector. He confronts Cassado in Paris, capturing him but refusing lethal vengeance. Later, his duel with Teronna in Aquadizer ends when Cassado interferes, severing her mecha's arm and deepening misunderstandings. Naida's sacrifice and revelation about Rubina intensify his resolve to clear his name. The finale sees him leading assaults on the Vegan Star, though unresolved threads—like Grendizer's origins, Dr. Hell's potential involvement, and the Fleed-Vega conflict—hint at ongoing struggles beyond the season.
