Description
Ayano Elizabeth Hakuhouin originates from 1999 AD as a Japanese high school student and heiress to the Hakuhouin-Ryū Judo Family. She lives with her grandfather, the master of their martial arts dojo, gaining significant judo expertise that directly shapes her future piloting techniques.
Recruited by engineer Curtis Lawson alongside her childhood best friend Yohko Yamamoto and others, Ayano is transplanted to 2999 AD to join TERRA's forces. She pilots the Super Struggle TA-27 starship, harnessing specialized "Grapple Attack" weaponry designed to latch onto enemy vessels and deliver destructive energy waves—a direct extension of her judo grappling skills.
Ayano presents as quiet, kind-hearted, and slow to anger. She deeply values her long friendship with Yohko, whom she has admired since childhood, yet struggles with persistent feelings of inferiority regarding her piloting abilities compared to Yohko's exceptional skills. This lack of confidence occasionally surfaces as emotional vulnerability, particularly after failed maneuvers in battle.
Her insecurities ultimately drive a temporary defection to the rival faction NESS, seeking to prove her independence. During this time, she falls under the influence of Zenga's "Old Timer's Inheritance," brainwashing her into opposing TERRA. This leads to a critical starship battle against Yohko, where Ayano's defeat also frees her from the brainwashing.
Later, when the Old Timer's Inheritance possesses her again during the Zenga tournament arc, Ayano gains access to enhanced powers. Faced with the Old Timer's Chronos System threatening universal destruction, she urges Yohko to kill her to stop it. Yohko instead defeats her non-lethally, severing the entity's control.
Beyond combat, Ayano frequently mediates conflicts between the more volatile personalities within TERRA's pilot team, particularly Yohko and Madoka Midou. Her efforts to maintain team cohesion reflect her underlying desire for harmonious relationships.
