Description
Currypanman is a major character from the Anpanman franchise and appears as one of the heroes in the 1992 film, Soreike! Anpanman: Tsumiki Shiro no Himitsu. He is instantly recognizable by his appearance, as his head is made from a bun filled with hot, spicy yellow curry, giving it a brown, lemon-like shape. He has red cheeks and typically wears an orange uniform with a lemon-shaped emblem, a white belt, yellow gloves, a yellow cape, and yellow boots.
In terms of personality, Currypanman is known for being cocky, proud, and brimming with self-confidence, often coming across as more narcissistic than his ally Shokupanman. He loves excitement and subscribes to a "spicy" way of life that emphasizes taking risks and pushing one's limits. This philosophy frequently clashes with the more cautious and "sweet" outlook of Shokupanman, leading the two to bicker often, though they nevertheless remain close friends and trusted companions. Beneath his boastful exterior, he is fundamentally kind and generous, especially when it comes to feeding people his delicious curry, although he can sometimes be insensitive to things he deems unimportant.
His motivation is typically aligned with the other heroes: to protect the innocent and defeat villains like Baikinman. In Tsumiki Shiro no Himitsu, his role is that of a dependable ally to Anpanman. The film's plot involves Currypanman and Anpanman saving the prince of Block Kingdom and his minister from danger and bringing them to safety at Uncle Jam's bakery. From there, they learn that Baikinman has taken over the Block Kingdom and work together to help the prince reclaim his throne. This adventure also sees him cooperating with other characters, including Shokupanman and the trio Donburiman. The film is part of a double feature that also includes a short titled Currypanman to SL Man, further highlighting his role as a lead character.
Currypanman's unique abilities are all derived from his curry-bun composition. His signature attacks include the Curry-punch and Curry-kick, which are similar to the attacks of Anpanman and Shokupanman, though he often winds up his arm more before delivering a punch. His most distinctive power is the Curry Spit, where he expels hot curry from his mouth. He can use this to temporarily blind his enemies or to feed hungry people. However, this power has a limitation: the more curry he spits out, the more his head shrinks, and he becomes weaker until he can replenish his supply. To help with this, he carries a cooking pot filled with curry while flying, which he uses to prepare meals for others. In some western-themed episodes, he has also been shown wielding dual pistols loaded with curry.
Regarding his background, there are different accounts between the various media of the franchise. In the manga books, Currypanman is baked by Uncle Jam, which makes him Anpanman's younger brother. However, in the anime series, his origins are more mysterious, and it is often stated that no one knows where he came from. Despite the lack of focus on his origin in the film, his key relationships are with his fellow heroes, viewing Anpanman and Shokupanman as close allies and Uncle Jam and Batako as parental figures. He also considers characters like Melonpanna, Rollpanna, and Creampanda as his siblings. Throughout the series, he has shown the capacity for development through various transformations, such as becoming "Fiery Currypanman" when exposed to extremely spicy curry, which makes him uncontrollably enraged, or "Refreshed Currypanman" after consuming mint-infused curry, which makes him polite and gentle like Shokupanman.
