Cheese began life as a starving puppy abandoned in the forest, discovered crying alone during Anpanman's inaugural patrol. The hero saved him by sharing part of his own head for the puppy to eat. Brought to Uncle Jam's bakery, Batako named him Cheese, and he became a permanent resident.

Physically, Cheese is a small, light-brown dog with rabbit-like short ears and a dark-brown tail tip. His ears appear darker in manga and picture books than in anime adaptations. He sleeps in a loaf-shaped doghouse outside the bakery, equipped with personal food and water bowls. Though initially depicted walking on four legs, he now frequently stands upright but retains canine sitting postures.

His personality blends fierce loyalty and bravery with comedic clumsiness. He understands human language, assists in baking and driving the Anpanman-go vehicle, yet occasionally shirks duties due to laziness. His enormous appetite leads to rapid eating. Despite his size, he fearlessly charges into danger to aid Anpanman or others.

Cheese possesses exceptional hearing to detect distant distress calls and a canine-strong sense of smell for tracking individuals.

Relationships define his existence: he shares profound loyalty with Anpanman, accompanying patrols and carrying replacement heads. He maintains close bonds with Batako through bakery assistance and frequent interactions with Melonpanna. Romantic feelings exist for Rare Cheese. He communicates through barks and gestures intuitively understood by bakery residents. Official materials designate him a "wise dog" or "super watchdog."
