Description
Pochacco is a male dog character created by Minoru Onoue for Sanrio in 1989. He appears as a white dog with black floppy ears, a black nose, black paw pads, and a short tail tipped in black, typically lacking a visible mouth though early animations sometimes showed one. His design features a short muzzle and a chubby, round body, often dressed in athletic attire like red or blue t-shirts or hoodies.

Born on February 29th (a leap day) on Uguisu Alley in Fuwafuwa Town, Pochacco also has alternate official backgrounds originating from Brazil or residing in New York City. His name comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia "pocha pocha" (ぽちゃぽちゃ), suggesting chubbiness and cuteness. His height is described as "four cups of banana ice cream" and his weight as "three obake carrots," though some media interpretations vary.

Pochacco exhibits a personality of curiosity, playfulness, and athleticism. Originally known as "The Yorimichi Dog," he is notably clumsy, frequently tripping during walks or skateboarding and ending up with head injuries and bandages. Despite this tendency to stumble, he excels in sports like soccer and basketball and enjoys skateboarding. He is vegetarian, favoring banana ice cream and carrots. His favorite flower is renge-so, his favorite color is light blue, and his zodiac sign is Pisces, associated with creativity and compassion.

Pochacco features in various Sanrio animated works. He stars as the protagonist in the 2001 OVA *Pochacco no Jack to Mame no Ki* (part of *Hello Kitty's Animation Theater*), an adaptation of *Jack and the Beanstalk*. He also plays a main role in the 1993 OVAs *Pochacco no Wakuwaku Birthday*, focusing on his birthday with the Pi-chan chicks, and *Pochacco no Ninjin Hata wa Oosawagi*, involving carrot patch adventures. Additionally, he appears as a supporting character in the 1991 film *Taabou no Ryuuguusei Daitanken* and as a recurring figure in the 2008–2009 TV series *The Adventures of Hello Kitty & Friends*.

Pochacco has a girlfriend named Pochamii and close friendships with the Pi-chan chicks (Piyo, Piko, Peepu). His social circle includes other Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty, Badtz-Maru, and Keroppi, sharing adventures with them. His popularity peaked in the early 1990s, declined after 1999, but resurged starting in 2017, leading to top placements in Sanrio’s annual character rankings (3rd in 2020–2021, 2nd in 2024). Since 2020, he has been part of the "Hapidanbui" subgroup alongside characters such as Tuxedo Sam and Badtz-Maru.
