Description
Originally named O-Hyaku or Hayakawa Hyaku, Hyakurin was married to the abusive samurai Hayakawa Kakōsai Genkei. She gave birth to his twins, a boy named Matsuhiko and an unnamed girl. Genkei killed their daughter immediately after birth, considering girls worthless. When Matsuhiko developed the same hereditary illness plaguing Genkei's family, Genkei murdered their eight-year-old son before Hyakurin's eyes. In retribution, Hyakurin killed her husband, leading to her arrest and a death sentence. Habaki Kagimura intervened, sparing her execution in exchange for service in the Mugai-ryū assassination group.
Her most striking physical trait is her compulsively bleached blonde hair, driven by an urge to remove bloodstains; she typically conceals it under a black wig, maintained with strong chemicals. She is also a smoker. Aged 29 during the main events, Hyakurin serves as the Mugai-ryū's deputy leader. Her swordsmanship is mediocre, but she possesses extensive knowledge of poisons and excels in stealth, disguise, and precision combat. Her primary weapon is "Burafuma" or "Little Steps," a collapsible wrist-mounted crossbow firing poisoned bolts; when folded, it features two blades for stabbing.
Hyakurin frequently operates alongside Shinriji, another Mugai-ryū member, subjecting him to harsh criticism and physical abuse despite his devotion. Their relationship is complex; Shinriji attempts a marriage proposal shortly before his death, which Hyakurin deflects, though she later acknowledges her care for him during captivity. A pivotal mission to assassinate Tamasaki fails, resulting in her capture by Ittō-ryū members led by Kinuka. Shinriji is killed during the conflict. Hyakurin endures days of torture and rape, suffering a severe injury to her right arm that permanently impairs her combat ability.
The assault leaves her pregnant. She initially seeks an abortion, believing the child would remind her of Shinriji's death and her attackers. Giichi persuades her to keep the child, framing it as their "last chance to ever be normal." Due to her pregnancy and facilitated by a deal between Habaki and Giichi, Hyakurin retires from active duty. She continues supporting her pragmatic protégée, Rin Asano. In later appearances, visibly pregnant, she reflects on Rin's youth and uncertainties, signaling her transition away from violence. Her character shows resilience masking deep trauma, reflected in a blunt demeanor, tactical intelligence, and coping mechanisms like hair bleaching. She maintains a morally ambiguous role, balancing loyalty to the Mugai-ryū with emerging maternal instincts.
