Description
Jet Link, designated Cyborg 002, is one of the central characters in the long-running Cyborg 009 franchise created by Shotaro Ishinomori. His background is that of a teenager from the West Side of New York City. Before being transformed, he was the leader of a street gang, a turbulent upbringing that led him into a life of delinquency. While the specific circumstances vary across different adaptations of the story, the core event involves him getting into serious trouble with the law, often over a fight with a rival gang that turns lethal. While fleeing from the police, he was tricked into getting into a car by an agent of the criminal organization Black Ghost, who promised him a way out but instead abducted him to be used as a test subject for their cyborg program. He became the second prototype in the 00 Cyborg Series, receiving his cybernetic enhancements against his will.

In terms of personality, Jet is known for being quick-tempered, brash, and stubborn, often speaking his mind with a cynical and sarcastic edge. He is not afraid to voice his opinions, even when they challenge the decisions of his teammates. Despite this rough exterior, he is deeply friendly, loyal, and dependable, often taking on the role of an easygoing older brother figure to the group. He has a particular dislike for the organization Black Ghost, holding a strong personal grudge and a determined resolve to see them destroyed. This fiery nature makes him a natural counterbalance to the more sensitive and idealistic leader of the team, Cyborg 009.

Jet's role within the team is primarily that of aerial combat and high-speed assault. He often works alongside Cyborg 009, frequently carrying him during flight missions and acting as a supportive partner in battle. His relationship with 009 is a key part of the story; while he can sometimes butt heads with 009's leadership decisions, he ultimately respects him and follows his commands without hesitation. He shares a strong camaraderie with all the other cyborgs, including Albert (004) and Pyunma (008), and is a reliable asset in any combat situation. His past as a gang member sometimes resurfaces, creating poignant moments when he revisits his old life or confronts figures from his history.

Over the course of the various manga and anime series, Jet's character experiences development, often centered on his past. One notable story arc involves him returning to New York and confronting the consequences of his earlier actions, including a rival who was also turned into a cyborg and seeks revenge. This forces him to come to terms with his human history and ultimately sever ties with his old life to fully embrace his role as a cyborg hero. In some versions of the story, he faces a moment of ultimate sacrifice, such as flying into space to rescue 009 with only enough fuel for one, demonstrating his profound loyalty and courage.

Regarding his abilities, Jet Link was specifically designed for high-speed aerial combat. His most defining power is his cybernetic flight capability, achieved through rocket boosters installed in his legs. This allows him to fly at speeds reaching up to Mach 5. In many incarnations, he also possesses an accelerator device, a prototype version of the one used by Cyborg 009, which grants him temporary bursts of incredible speed to outmaneuver opponents. Initially, he also possessed enhanced strength, though it is less pronounced than later models due to the need to keep his body light for flight. Additionally, his skills from his former life as a gang member make him a highly proficient marksman; he is often depicted as a skilled gun user, sometimes wielding two pistols simultaneously. His most distinctive physical feature is his large, aquiline nose, a character trait that has become iconic and memorable in Japanese pop culture.
