TV-Series
Description
Hattori Hanzō is a male shinobi who serves Motoyasu Matsudaira, acting as a loyal subordinate to his master. His allegiance is primarily to Motoyasu rather than to the larger forces his master aligns with, demonstrating a personal devotion that takes precedence over any other political ties.
As a ninja, Hanzō typically dresses in all black clothing, a practical choice for his profession that also serves to conceal his features. He has a youthful appearance and voice, but his face is usually hidden.
In terms of personality, Hanzō is portrayed as cold and efficient when carrying out his duties. He approaches his assignments with a pragmatic mindset, focused on completing his objectives without unnecessary interference. While he typically refuses to listen to opponents who try to negotiate with him, he is willing to make exceptions when a proposal clearly benefits his master and presents no disadvantages to his side. This practical nature reveals that his loyalty can be flexible when the outcome serves Motoyasu's interests.
Hanzō possesses considerable confidence in his shinobi abilities. He has a philosophy against using poison, preferring more direct methods, though he is willing to abandon this principle if the situation demands it. He enjoys encountering worthy opponents and has a battle-loving temperament that could theoretically suit him for a general's position, though he instead leads the Imagawa clan's ninja forces.
His role in the story begins with early appearances reporting to his master and Imagawa Yoshimoto about Yoshiharu Sagara joining Nobuna Oda's ranks. During a confrontation, Hanzō attacks Yoshiharu with shuriken, knives, and various techniques intended to eliminate what he perceives as an Oda spy. Despite his repeated assaults, Yoshiharu manages to evade most of his attacks, sustaining only light wounds. This evasion earns Hanzō's profound respect, as he boasts that nobody before Yoshiharu has ever dodged so many of his attacks.
Another key relationship involves Inuchiyo Maeda, who manages to fight Hanzō on equal ground for a brief period before her shorter stature puts her at a disadvantage. When Yoshiharu attempts to interfere, it only makes Inuchiyo more vulnerable as she must protect him. Ultimately, Yoshiharu convinces Hanzō that releasing them serves Motoyasu's benefit, arguing that if Nobuna wins, Motoyasu can defect from the Imagawa clan. Recognizing the logic in this reasoning, Hanzō allows them to escape.
His abilities as a shinobi are considerable, demonstrated through his proficiency with thrown weapons like shuriken and knives, as well as various combat techniques. He is skilled enough to serve as the leader of the Imagawa ninja forces, a position that reflects his competence. Throughout the story, he remains active and loyal to Motoyasu, ultimately aligning with the Oda faction when his master's interests shift in that direction.
