Description
Gōra Hakone is the older brother of Yumoto Hakone and manager of the family-run Kurotama Hot Springs. He acts as Yumoto's primary caregiver due to their parents' extended absence, hinted to be caused by debt or tragedy. Standing 190 cm tall, he has orange hair, pink or pink-purple eyes, and occasional stubble. His daily routines include chopping wood as a hobby—despite the naturally heated springs not requiring it—and preparing meals like homemade remedies for Yumoto or "rice bombs" for others.
Years prior, Gōra secretly served as the heroic Battle Lover "Maximum Gorar" (or "Maximum Gourer"), empowered by Hashibiro Senior, an alien resembling a shoebill bird. Wielding a battle axe or halberd capable of firing the "Makiwari Beam," he saved individuals such as the young Beppu twins from monsters, earning their deep admiration. His unexpected popularity as a perceived "villain" on a space-produced TV show led to the show's cancellation when audiences favored him over the protagonists. This heroic past remained unknown to Yumoto.
Gōra demonstrates consistent protectiveness toward Yumoto, comforting him during childhood bullying and supporting his growth. His initial disapproval of physical conflict shifted after becoming a Battle Lover, leading him to appreciate Yumoto's ability to defend himself. During Season 1's climax, he is transformed into the Log-Chopping Monster via a Zundar Needle while attempting to reveal the orchestrated nature of the conflicts, forcing a confrontation with the Battle Lovers, including Yumoto. In Season 2, the Beppu twins, motivated by idolizing his past heroism, kidnap him. After being rescued, Gōra acknowledges their maturity, which helps reform their behavior.
He exhibits cluelessness regarding the Beppu twins' obsession, calmness toward supernatural events like monster attacks, and altruism, such as comforting a monster seeking companionship during Christmas. Mysterious remarks, like declining to join baths due to unworthiness, and his ability to intimidate monsters through stern rebukes, hint at unresolved aspects of his character.
