Description
Tsurugi Tatewaki hails from Atlantia, Legendia's largest nation, but was stolen as an infant amidst political riots and civil unrest triggered by the emperor's death. Raised unknowingly of his royal lineage by an elderly couple in Pacifice's rural reaches, his early life revolved around skateboarding and dreams of turning pro. This ordinary existence shattered when Bringer, the protective droid who spirited him to safety years before, awakened during an attack by Atlantian forces. Bringer revealed Tsurugi's identity as Atlantia's second prince, younger brother to the current ruler Yaiba, disclosing his mother's disappearance and his destiny as the Red Sword Eye of Light wielder.
Initially unfamiliar with the Battle Spirits card game, Tsurugi received instruction from Bringer during his first clash with Atlantia, displaying a natural aptitude and swiftly mastering its mechanics. His deck featured signature cards like The ShineDragon Shining-Dragon and The ShiningSacredSword Shining-Sword, later augmented by powerful spirits including The ShiningSunDragonEmperor Shining-Dragon-Ark. Journeying to Atlantia to find his mother and confront the perceived tyranny of Yaiba and Atlantia's authoritarian expansions, he united the other Sword Eyes of Light: Sora (Blue), Kizakura (Yellow), Hagakure (Green), Haqua (White), and Suou (Purple), forging alliances amid political strife and divine forces.
A pivotal transformation occurred when Tsurugi surrendered his Red Sword Eye of Light to Yaiba during a critical duel, losing it temporarily. This coincided with Bringer's capture and reprogramming. Facing diminished power, Tsurugi accepted the red Sword Brave of Darkness from Vargas, becoming the first dual-wielder of both Light and Darkness Sword Eyes. This shift allowed him to command dark-aligned spirits like The DarkDragon Dark-Tyrannosaura and The DarknessDemonSword Dark-Blade while retaining his light connection. His motivations evolved beyond familial reunion upon learning Yaiba's true objective: gathering the twelve Sword Braves to summon the Sword of Judgment and wage war against Legendia's creator god, reframing Yaiba's actions as well-intentioned extremism.
Tsurugi's development centered on reconciling his dual heritage and challenging divine authority. Discovering Garudos, Atlantia's regent, had manipulated events—murdering Tsurugi's father and framing his mother—prompted an alliance with Yaiba against this greater foe. Their collaboration culminated in a final battle where Garudos merged with Legendia's god, threatening global annihilation. Tsurugi harnessed his combined light and dark powers, epitomized by summoning The DragonShineDeity Shining-Dragon-Overray, supporting Yaiba in wielding the Sword of Judgment to permanently destroy the god. This act liberated humanity from divine control, exposed Garudos's machinations, and fulfilled Tsurugi's journey from sheltered youth to a decisive force reshaping Legendia's destiny.
Throughout, Tsurugi maintained an optimistic, empathetic outlook. His relationships, especially his protective bond with Bringer—defended even at personal cost—and his conflicted connection with Yaiba, underscored themes of loyalty and familial reconciliation. His ability to unite adversaries against common threats reflected his growth into a leader transcending the light-dark binary, ultimately redefining the Sword Eyes' role in Legendia's future.
