Description
Akane Hino attends Nanairogaoka Middle School as a second-year student. Hailing from Osaka, she naturally speaks in the Kansai dialect, using "uchi" instead of "watashi" to refer to herself. Her signature expressions include "aka~n" and "uchi no deban ya!" Akane presents a tomboyish demeanor in her posture and actions, yet possesses a genuine fondness for cute things, especially gorillas. Driven by a passion for humor, she thrives as the class jokester, constantly employing puns and playful teasing. This trait makes her popular, though her bluntness sometimes causes unease, like when introducing friends with exaggerated labels. However, no malice motivates her teasing, and her friends rarely take offense. Akane displays fierce loyalty and acts impulsively to protect others, rushing to aid Cure Happy against an Akanbe out of gratitude, an act that granted her the Smile Pact and the power to transform into Cure Sunny.
Her family runs an okonomiyaki restaurant where Akane actively helps and enjoys cooking. She shares a caring, though sometimes charred, relationship with her mother, Masako. Akane frequently argues with her father, Daigo, especially about her name or the restaurant's secret ingredient, but deeply respects him. Her younger brother, Genki, often laughs at her and shares embarrassing stories. Academically, Akane excels in volleyball and aspires to become her school team's ace attacker. She exhibits intense self-criticism when her performance slips and values independence, typically refusing help but making exceptions for those showing genuine enthusiasm. Initially, she prioritized volleyball over Pretty Cure duties, rejecting Miyuki's invitation to train, before fully embracing her role as a protector.
As Cure Sunny, she commands fire and flame. Her transformation phrase is "Pretty Cure! Smile Charge!" Her basic attack is "Fiery Circle." Among the Smile Pretty Cure team, she possesses significant physical strength, capable of generating seismic impacts with punches or lifting massive boulders. Visually, Cure Sunny has orange hair and eyes. Her longer hair is worn loose with a portion styled in a high bun adorned by a white angel wing accessory. A white tiara with an orange gem rests on her head. Her costume is primarily light orange with burnt orange accents, featuring a short dress with triangular trimming and pleated skirt borders, white feathered sleeves with orange spheres, burnt orange shorts, and white thigh-high boots with pastel orange toes and ribbon accents. She carries a white bag with scalloped lining on her right side. Multiple upgraded forms exist: Tiara Mode adds a gold crown and ribbon-shaped earrings; Princess Sunny elongates her hair into a bow-like bun with curled locks and lightens her outfit colors; Ultra Cure Sunny incorporates feathery fabric layers, pale orange diamonds, gold accents, wing-like boot cuffs, and functional white wings. A distinct Japanese fairytale-themed outfit appears in one movie, consisting of a burgundy kimono top, orange puffy pants with tangerine segment details, and a yellow waist sash.
Akane maintains close bonds with her fellow Pretty Cure teammates. She describes Hoshizora Miyuki (Cure Happy) as a scatterbrain capable of seriousness when needed, deeply valuing their friendship despite occasional bewilderment at Miyuki's enthusiasm. Though she teases Kise Yayoi (Cure Peace) frequently, she genuinely admires Yayoi's artistic talent and becomes flustered when Yayoi's crush on Brian is mentioned. Akane respects Midorikawa Nao (Cure March) as a fellow sports ace, engaging in friendly rivalry while maintaining a strong connection. She acknowledges Aoki Reika's (Cure Beauty) academic excellence and leadership roles, referring to her as "Miss Popular." Akane developed a significant crush on Brian Taylor, showcasing aspects of Japanese culture to him and learning basic English in return. His departure caused her sadness, though they maintained a postal friendship, with their relationship explored further in novel adaptations.
Within "Eiga Precure All Stars: Haru no Carnival," Cure Sunny appears among the 40 Pretty Cure warriors summoned to the musical kingdom of Harmonia for a spring carnival. The event is disrupted when antagonists Odoren and Utaen capture the fairies and steal the Pretty Cures' transformation devices. Cure Sunny participates in the initial performances and interviews orchestrated by the villains. When Odoren locks away the transformation items, trapping most Cures, Cure Sunny remains among those confined. The crisis is ultimately resolved when Haruka Haruno (Cure Flora), Minami Kaido (Cure Mermaid), and Kirara Amanogawa (Cure Twinkle) generate new Dress-Up Keys through song, freeing the devices. All Cures, including Cure Sunny, then collaborate to combat Odoren's minions (Dorobon) and confront the enraged guardian dragon of Harmonia. Following the dragon's purification by the Princess Pretty Cure team using the new keys, Cure Sunny joins the collective celebration of the restored carnival.
