Description
Shun Kazami stands as a central protagonist throughout the Bakugan series. He began as one of the original inventors of the Bakugan brawling game alongside his childhood friend Dan Kuso. Initially the top-ranked global brawler, Shun dropped to sixth place after Masquerade dominated the rankings and his grandfather forbade brawling due to his mother's critical illness. Her passing halted his brawling, though he later rejoined as the Ventus specialist of the Battle Brawlers.
Trained in ninja techniques by his grandfather, Shun embodies calmness and strategic precision. He rarely displays overt emotion, maintaining composure even when annoyed or angered. His lone-wolf tendencies gradually softened through loyalty to friends, though he retained a preference for solitude and initial distrust of outsiders. His appearance evolved across the series: featuring an early ponytail and purple/black attire in Battle Brawlers, a Vestal-inspired black outfit with a green vest in New Vestroia after cutting his hair, a green ninja-style uniform in Gundalian Invaders, and light-layered shirts with tan pants in Mechtanium Surge.
His primary Bakugan partners shifted across arcs. In Battle Brawlers, he partnered with Ventus Skyress, received from his mother. Skyress evolved into Storm Skyress during a Doom Dimension trial where Shun confronted an illusion of his mother; nearly succumbing to despair, he recognized his friends' importance, triggering the evolution. In New Vestroia, he partnered with Ventus Ingram, later Master Ingram, after Skyress chose to remain in New Vestroia. He saved Ingram during a Vestal abduction and partnered to resist the Vexos. Though temporarily reunited with Skyress, he accepted her departure as Ingram became his permanent partner. During Gundalian Invaders, he partnered with Ventus Hawktor, ranking second in Bakugan Interspace, using Silver Swayther as Battle Gear and briefly swapping Pyrus Lumino Dragonoid with Dan. His distrust of Ren Krawler led him to ally with Fabia Sheen, exposing Ren's lies about the Gundalian-Neathian war. In Mechtanium Surge Arc 1, he partnered with Ventus Taylean, wielding Gold Hammermor (BakuNano) and Mechtogan like Silent Strike. In Arc 2, he partnered with Ventus Jaakor and temporarily used Darkus Skytruss and Orbeum, forming combinations like Ventus/Darkus Magmafury.
Shun's combat style merges ninja tactics with Bakugan abilities, emphasizing speed and stealth. Key battles include defeating Masquerade alongside Dan, overcoming Vexos members like Mylene and Shadow Prove in New Vestroia, and exposing Gundalian deception in Gundalian Invaders. Despite ranking fluctuations—third by the end of Battle Brawlers, fourth early in Mechtanium Surge due to reduced brawling—he consistently proved elite skill, reclaiming the top spot temporarily before settling at second behind Dan.
His growth is marked by increasing reliance on allies despite initial self-reliance. He mentored Komba O'Charlie in ninja and brawling techniques and collaborated with rivals like Ace Grit in New Vestroia tournaments. In later arcs, he detected anomalies in Dan and Drago's power, urging transparency to prevent team fractures.
