Description
Masato Ōsuki, a 16-year-old Japanese high school student, finds himself an unwilling beta tester in a fantasy MMORPG crafted to enhance parent-child bonds. He enters this world with his mother, Mamako Ōsuki, after mistakenly listing her name during selection. His initial thirst for adventure sours instantly as Mamako's overwhelming power consistently overshadows his own contributions, fueling persistent frustration in his struggle to carve out a heroic identity distinct from her.
Physically, Masato presents as an ordinary teen with brown hair and purple eyes. His signature gear includes the legendary aerial combat sword Filamento of the Vast Horizon, unleashing energy waves effective against flying foes, a healing jacket accelerating recovery, and a damage-reduction bracelet offering partial resistance to negative status effects. This kit contrasts sharply with Mamako's ground-targeted multi-hit abilities, pushing them into complementary combat roles despite Masato's reluctance.
Personality-wise, Masato displays typical teenage embarrassment towards his mother's affection, amplified by her deceptively youthful appearance drawing unwanted attention. He exhibits romantic awkwardness, particularly around party member Medhi, for whom he develops special feelings. While prone to insecurity when measured against Mamako's strength, underlying kindness and protective instincts drive him to defend bullied individuals. Early selfishness gradually yields to greater consideration for others through shared trials.
Masato's character evolves across distinct phases. Initially fixated on personal glory, his perspective shifts upon witnessing fractured parent-child dynamics within their party: Wise's abandonment by mother Kazuno and Medhi's oppressive relationship with controlling mother Medhimama highlight his healthier bond with Mamako. His combat skills also advance: Filamento's power amplifies through emotional resonance with allies, he gains summoning abilities by Volume 5, and develops "Child Sense," perceiving carnation-colored auras identifying maternal figures. Key growth moments include fiercely protecting Mamako against Fratello's assault in Volume 7, successfully persuading Porta during the Hahades confrontation in Volume 8, and a temporary reversion to infancy in Volume 9 where Mamako re-raises him.
The beach OVA explores psychological dimensions when retrograde amnesia temporarily erases Masato's memories and associated embarrassment. Interacting with Mamako without resistance in this state, he nearly confesses romantic feelings under a sunset before a kraken attack restores his memories, revealing the subconscious strength of their bond beneath surface frustrations. Later, his father Hayato enters the game disguised as "Hawk," wielding the Demon King's Dusk Blade. Masato bonds with Hawk unaware of their relationship, inadvertently influencing Hawk's transformation into the Demon King.
