Description
Rozé operates as the alias of Sakuya Sumeragi, disguising herself as a male mercenary in Hokkaido while posing as the younger brother of Ash Phoenix. Together, they form the "Nameless Mercenaries" duo. Her appearance as Rozé features an androgynous style: a short blonde wig with a red streak, cyan eyes altered by a voice-changing choker, and orange-brown attire trimmed with white fur. This choker masks her identity and suppresses her Geass ability.
Sakuya is the daughter of Jugo Sumeragi, Governor of Hokkaido, and Princess Sherry le Britannia, eldest daughter of Emperor Charles zi Britannia, granting her a legitimate claim to the Britannian throne. Her childhood included a close bond with her body double, Sakura Haruyanagininomiya. After the Neo-Britannian Empire invaded Hokkaido, killing her father and capturing Sakura, Sakuya was separated from Sakura during an escape attempt. She later encountered L.L., who bestowed upon her the "Power of Absolute Obedience" Geass—allowing her to implant unbreakable commands through her voice, activated by a sigil over her throat. He warned this power could lead to lifelong isolation.
Returning to Hokkaido, Sakuya discovered Ash’s involvement in her father’s death. Seeking vengeance, she used her Geass to manipulate Ash into believing she was his deceased brother Roze, forging their mercenary partnership. Her personality diverges sharply between identities: as Rozé, she displays a laid-back, cheerful, and theatrical demeanor; as Sakuya, she reveals a cold, calculating, and vengeful nature focused solely on rescuing Sakura and avenging her father. Initially viewing Ash as a disposable tool to discard after achieving her goals, her strategic intellect enables effective battlefield command and chess proficiency, though overconfidence stems from her reliance on Geass.
A pivotal revelation occurs when Sakuya learns Ash’s past: orphaned with his biological brother, both were trained as assassins by Norland von Lunebelg. After Norland killed Ash’s brother, Ash rebelled and was imprisoned alongside Sakuya’s father. During a failed escape attempt, Jugo died. Horrified, Sakuya realizes Ash would have protected her willingly without Geass, fulfilling a promise to her father. Her Geass had erased Ash’s memories of his brother and forced him to perceive her as a sibling substitute.
This guilt intensifies when Christoph Scissorman captures them. Freed from Geass influence by an anti-Geass device, Ash nearly kills Sakuya in rage over her deception. After sparing her, Sakuya confronts Norland and achieves her objectives. In the aftermath, she chooses permanent atonement: using her Geass on herself to become mute, sealing away her power while ascending as Hokkaido’s ruler.
