Hisako Arato is a second-year student at Tōtsuki Culinary Institute, widely recognized as the loyal secretary and close companion to Erina Nakiri, a role that earned her the nickname "Hishoko." Born into the Arato family, which specializes in Chinese medicine, she developed expertise in medicinal cooking, utilizing health-focused ingredients like Chinese herbs and turtle-based specialties. This culinary focus was honed to serve Erina, whom she deeply admires.
Since childhood, Hisako has been devoted to Erina, viewing her as an empress-like figure and initially adopting a servant-like mindset. She manages Erina’s schedule, handles administrative tasks, and ensures Erina can focus on her culinary work. Her loyalty is evident in her protective nature, such as intercepting unwanted letters from Nao Sadatsuka, who once challenged her for the secretary position in a Shokugeki during middle school. Hisako won this duel, maintaining her role and enforcing Nao’s distance.
During the 43rd Annual Tōtsuki Autumn Election, Hisako competed but lost in the quarterfinals to Akira Hayama. This defeat impacted her deeply, leading to feelings of inadequacy and a temporary leave from Erina’s side. Akira criticized her lack of ambition and over-reliance on Erina, which exacerbated her shame. However, during the Stagiaire event, Hisako partnered with Sōma Yukihira at Restaurant Mitamura. Observing Sōma’s resilience and receiving his encouragement, she regained confidence and resolved to stand beside Erina as an equal rather than follow behind her. This marked a shift in their relationship, transitioning from a master-servant dynamic to a genuine friendship.
Hisako’s culinary skills are characterized by her use of spices and herbal blends, reflecting her background in Chinese medicine. She employs techniques such as adding mysterious powders and spices to dishes, as seen during the Autumn Election preliminary round. Her approach often emphasizes health-oriented cooking, aligning with her family’s traditions.
During the Regiment de Cuisine, Hisako openly opposed Azami Nakiri’s ideology, defending Erina and declaring herself Erina’s friend rather than a mere servant. This bold stance strengthened their bond, though she later felt audacious for doing so. Erina reassured her and suggested they use familiar terms like "Erina-chan," though both eventually settled on maintaining formal address while growing closer. After the rebels’ victory, Hisako resumed her secretary duties, supporting Erina in her new role as director of Tōtsuki.
Hisako’s interactions with Sōma Yukihira evolved from initial hostility to mutual respect. She initially viewed him as a threat to Erina and attempted to have him expelled from Tōtsuki. After their partnership during the Stagiaire event, she recognized his talents and kindness, leading to a friendly relationship. She later acknowledged Sōma’s potential to challenge Azami and supported him during the Regiment de Cuisine.
Nao Sadatsuka developed an obsessive interest in Hisako after their Autumn Election encounter, referring to her as "Hisako Onee-sama," which caused Hisako confusion and discomfort. This dynamic added complexity to Hisako’s interactions within the academy.
