Description
Kiyoshi Adachi is a thirty-year-old man who works as a sales support staff member at the Toyokawa stationery company. On his thirtieth birthday, he discovers that an urban legend is true: by remaining a virgin until this age, he has gained a magical ability that forces him to hear the internal thoughts of anyone he touches. This power, which manifests through physical contact, proves to be an immediate source of distress, particularly in crowded spaces like trains where he is bombarded by the unfiltered thoughts of strangers.

Adachi is characterized by a deeply introverted and shy nature, which often leads to him becoming flustered in social situations. His personality has been shaped by past romantic rejections, most notably an experience in college when he overheard a crush declare that she could never see him as a romantic interest. This event cemented a profound lack of self-esteem and caused him to withdraw from pursuing any further relationships. Despite his insecurities, he is a conscientious and dependable employee, often putting the needs of others before his own, even to his own detriment. When faced with the constant stream of others' thoughts, he develops a tendency for sarky internal commentary as a coping mechanism.

At the outset of the story, Adachi’s primary motivation is simply to navigate his daily life while managing the inconvenience of his new power. He goes out of his way to avoid physical contact, altering his commuting schedule and using electronic payments to minimize accidental touches. His role as the protagonist is set in motion when an accidental touch reveals that his popular and accomplished colleague, Yuuichi Kurosawa, harbors intense romantic feelings for him. Overwhelmed by disbelief, Adachi initially tries to distance himself, unable to comprehend why someone like Kurosawa would be interested in him. However, as he continues to inadvertently hear Kurosawa's sincere and caring thoughts, he begins to confront his own feelings and gains the courage to explore a relationship. He eventually confesses his own love, marking a significant turning point in his life.

Adachi’s key relationships are central to his development. His relationship with Kurosawa is the most transformative; Kurosawa's consistent affection and respect help Adachi build confidence and reduce his negative self-perception. This relationship culminates in them becoming a couple, moving in together, and eventually marrying. He also shares a close bond with his best friend from college, Masato Tsuge. Tsuge is the only person in whom Adachi confides about his magical ability. Adachi is supportive of Tsuge's career as a writer and encourages him in his own romantic pursuits. Additionally, he has a supportive relationship with his younger brother, Kazuya, which grew stronger after their parents' divorce during Adachi's childhood.

Throughout the story, Adachi undergoes considerable personal development. He evolves from a passive observer of his own life, hampered by low self-esteem, into a more active participant who learns to value himself. A major part of his development involves learning to trust in a relationship without relying on his ability to read minds. He eventually confesses his magical power to Kurosawa, and after their relationship becomes physically intimate, the power vanishes permanently, forcing him to rely on genuine communication.

Notable abilities include his magical power of mind-reading, which is activated through skin-to-skin contact and allows him to hear a person's current thoughts. He also has the ability to see the visual fantasies or imaginations of the person he is touching. This power is the primary catalyst for the plot. Beyond the magical, Adachi possesses a quiet dependability and a kind heart, often helping his coworkers when he becomes aware of their unspoken struggles, though this trait also makes him prone to being taken advantage of in the workplace. Physically, he is described as having medium-length black hair that often covers part of his left eye, blue eyes, thick eyebrows, and a distinctive mole on the left side of his neck.
