Mio Takamiya is the Spirit of Origin, the very first spirit to appear in the world. She was created thirty years before the main story as a side effect of a magical ritual performed by three powerful magicians who sought to rewrite the world. Her emergence caused the catastrophic Eurasia Spacequake, an event that reshaped history and led to the loss of many lives. Following her birth, she was discovered by Shin Takamiya and his younger sister Mana Takamiya, and she developed a deep emotional bond with Shin, who became her lover. After Shin was killed, Mio used herself as a vessel to recreate his body and rebirth him as Shido Itsuka, granting him the ability to absorb spiritual power.

Mio initially appeared innocent and open, but the trauma of losing Shin transformed her personality into one that is melancholic, ruthless, and driven by a singular purpose. She retains a deep, underlying sorrow and a complex blend of love and vengeance. Her motivations are rooted in her love for Shin and her desire to recreate the world in a way that would allow them to be together, as well as a longing for someone to surpass her power and bring her peace. She is capable of empathy but does not hesitate to manipulate others to achieve her goals.

In the story, Mio is the central figure behind the existence of all other spirits, as she bestowed Sephira Crystals upon humans in moments of despair, transforming them into spirits. She operates under two primary identities: Reine Murasame, a human avatar created to observe Shido and work as a Ratatoskr analyst, and Phantom, a mysterious mosaic-covered spirit who distributes the crystals. Her role is both that of an antagonist and a tragic figure whose actions set the entire conflict of the series in motion. She is responsible for the creation of all known spirits, including Tohka Yatogami, Kurumi Tokisaki, Kotori Itsuka, and many others.

Key relationships define her character. Shinji Takamiya is her lover from a past life, and his rebirth as Shido Itsuka is the focus of her long-term plan. She initially sees Shido as a vessel for Shin but eventually comes to accept him as a separate person, regarding him as the second most important presence in her heart. Mana Takamiya is the younger sister of her late lover, and Mio feels a flicker of emotion upon learning of her tragic fate. Kurumi Tokisaki is a former partner and dearest friend whom Mio deceived into killing her friend, leading Kurumi to vow to kill the First Spirit and making her the only spirit who has not forgiven Mio. The three pure-blood magicians who summoned her—Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott, Elliot Baldwin Woodman, and Ellen Mira Mathers—are known as the three sinners responsible for her birth, and their actions continue to influence the world.

Mio undergoes significant development, evolving from a newborn spirit with innocent wonder into a calculating and powerful being hardened by loss. Her journey involves a gradual shift from viewing Shido as a replacement for Shin to acknowledging him as his own person, which alters the nature of her final intentions.

Her abilities are far beyond any other spirit, earning her a god-like status. She wields three Angels: Ain Soph Aur, which emits lethal light particles capable of causing instant death to anything within its range; Ain Soph, the Angel of Laws that can manipulate the laws of reality across a vast area, reshaping landscapes and negating movements; and Ain, her ultimate Angel that can erase beings and objects from existence with blinding light. She also possesses the unique ability to create Sephira Crystals by distributing portions of her own spiritual power and emotions, which allows her to create new spirits. She can replicate the abilities of other spirits, including teleportation and flight, and her personal Sephira Crystal has a built-in defense mechanism that attacks anyone other than herself who tries to wield it.
