Description
Matsu is a supporting character in the anime The Fable. He is an arms dealer with a long history of association with the Maguro clan, but his operations extend far beyond weapons trading. On the surface, he maintains a friendly public persona as the owner of a snack bar, which serves as a front for his numerous illicit activities. Behind this facade, he runs a corpse disposal service and an information agency, and he is also involved in the rare animal smuggling business. Matsu has a daughter named Sakura, whose safety is a central concern in his life. His background is marked by a violent encounter with a figure named Yamaoka, a fight that cost Matsu his left eye. Following that incident, Yamaoka threatened Matsu's daughter, using that leverage to force Matsu to work as his subordinate. This blackmail is the primary reason Matsu remains entangled in the criminal underworld; he is not in the business by choice but rather out of coercion to protect his family. His motivations are therefore rooted in survival and the protection of his daughter, making him a reluctant participant in the conflicts that arise around him. In the story, Matsu's role is that of a connected underworld figure who possesses valuable information and resources. He is drawn into the central conflict when Sunakawa approaches him to share information about Fable. Although Matsu is hesitant and tries to stay out of trouble, Yamaoka's plans force his hand, and he ends up becoming involved in events that include the murder of a character named Hamada. His key relationships are defined by this dynamic of coercion: Yamaoka is his primary antagonist and manipulator, while the Maguro clan represents the criminal organization with which he has long-standing ties. His connection to Fable is indirect but consequential, as the information he holds makes him a target for those seeking to understand or control the legendary hitman. Matsu's development across the series is tied to his struggle against the circumstances that bind him. He starts as a man trapped by his past and by the threats against his family, and his arc involves navigating the increasing pressure from multiple sides as the larger criminal plots unfold. His notable abilities include his extensive network in the Osaka underworld, his knowledge of weapons and illegal trade routes, his capacity to dispose of bodies and gather intelligence, and his experience as a survivor of violent encounters. He is characterized by his damaged left eye, a physical reminder of the fight that changed his life, and by his small eyes and mustache, which give him an unassuming appearance that contrasts with his dangerous line of work. Matsu represents the type of character who is caught between the ordinary world and the underworld, forced to operate in the shadows not out of ambition but out of necessity.
