Description
Sunaga is a minor character in Beastars, recognized as the middle-aged, male barn owl who serves as the cook and proprietor of the Udon Bebebe restaurant. At thirty-five years old, he has a slim build, short stature, pale plumage, a distinctive heart-shaped facial disc, and small black eyes, and he typically wears a Japanese-style kitchen uniform. His personality is consistently portrayed as very friendly, and he maintains a strong sense of camaraderie with the staff he employs.
Sunaga’s primary role in the story is as the manager who hires Legoshi to work in his establishment. His motivations appear to be practical and business-oriented; upon seeing the scar on Legoshi’s face, he decides to assign the young wolf to kitchen duties to avoid alarming the herbivorous customers. However, he also demonstrates a degree of trust in his new employee, later tasking Legoshi with a delivery to a marine customer, even providing instructions on what to say in the marine language and becoming irritated when Legoshi questions the assignment.
Key relationships are primarily professional, centered on his role as the boss of Legoshi and other restaurant workers including Thomas, Mika, and Donson. His development is subtle, mostly revealed through his management style, such as allowing his carnivorous staff to plan a welcome party for Legoshi at the Black Market, while still ultimately respecting Legoshi’s decision to decline the invitation. A notable ability demonstrated by Sunaga is his capability to speak the marine language, a skill that is shown to be rare among land-dwelling characters.
