Description
Yuma Ashihara is the protagonist of the series, an 11-year-old elementary school student who finds himself at the center of a catastrophic event when a virtual reality game begins merging with reality. As a sixth-grader, he becomes one of the playtesters for a brand-new VRMMORPG called Actual Magic, an experience that initially fills him with amazement at the realistic fantasy world the game has created. Yuma has a twin sister named Sawa Ashihara, and the two share a close but occasionally complicated sibling dynamic. Alongside his best friend Kenji Kondo and childhood friend Nagi Sano, Yuma explores the game’s environment, having chosen the Monster Tamer class for his avatar.

Yuma is described as a kind-hearted boy who deeply cares for those around him, a trait that makes him a reliable presence during the life-threatening situations he soon faces. While he demonstrates composure and dependability in serious battles, he also has an occasionally absent-minded side that adds to his character. When the game begins fusing with reality, Yuma is confronted with immediate horror. After being forcibly logged out, he encounters Sumika Watamaki, one of the most beautiful girls in his class, who has been transformed into a terrifying monster with a blank expression and a row of ravenous teeth, clutching a severed arm. This shocking event thrusts Yuma into a struggle for survival amidst chaos and confusion, where he must figure out how to navigate a world where death lurks around every corner.

Throughout the story, Yuma’s primary motivation becomes the need to understand what is happening and to survive alongside his sister and remaining friends. He is driven by a desire to protect his companions, a goal that forces him to confront not only monsters but also the psychological weight of their situation. His group includes his twin sister Sawa, who possesses her own secrets and may be hiding something crucial from him, as well as his best friend Kenji. The disappearance of his childhood friend Nagi also becomes a key concern that fuels his actions. Yuma’s role in the story is that of the central protagonist who witnesses the initial erosion of reality and must lead the effort to uncover the truth behind the fusion of worlds. His relationships are central to the narrative, particularly the dynamic with his sister, which involves both sibling rivalry and a deep, protective bond. As the series progresses, Yuma is expected to undergo significant development, evolving from an amazed child player into a determined survivor forced to make difficult choices in a death game environment where the stakes are permanent and real. While his specific abilities are still being defined in the source material, his chosen Monster Tamer class in the original game suggests he may have skills related to controlling or commanding creatures, which could prove vital in the merged reality. His capability in battle and his reliable nature are highlighted as key assets as he fights alongside his companions to navigate this new, dangerous world.
