Description
Eiko Hōzuki is a central character in Dark Gathering, serving as the link between the supernatural world and the two other main protagonists. She is a young woman of college age and is the childhood friend of Keitaro Gentoga. Their bond dates back to elementary school, and a shared traumatic incident involving a spiritual curse during their middle school years solidified her obsessive devotion to him.
On the surface, Eiko presents a cheerful and energetic demeanor, but this masks a deeply obsessive and possessive personality, particularly concerning Keitaro. Her affection for him has developed into a dark obsession, displaying clear yandere tendencies. She uses her advanced IT skills to secretly monitor Keitaro, placing surveillance equipment such as hidden cameras, microphones, and GPS trackers on him to keep a constant watch on his activities. While this behavior disturbs even the pragmatic Yayoi, Eiko's actions are often tolerated because her surveillance inadvertently provides valuable information for their ghost-hunting expeditions.
Eiko's role within the group is primarily that of logistical support and strategy. Unlike her younger cousin Yayoi Hōzuki, who can see spirits, and Keitaro, who acts as a magnet for them, Eiko initially lacks any spiritual sixth sense. She compensates for this with her technological expertise and physical fitness. She serves as the primary caretaker for Yayoi, providing the tech support that enables their dangerous expeditions. Her motivations for participating in these life-threatening hunts are twofold: to bind Keitaro to the supernatural world as a means of maintaining their connection, and because she has developed a genuine, thrill-seeking fascination with the fear and terror she experiences during spirit encounters, sometimes laughing off near-death experiences.
As the story progresses, Eiko evolves from a non-combatant driver and tech expert into a capable and ruthless partner. Her ruthlessness comes to mirror that of Yayoi when the group is threatened, showing she is willing to be strategically vicious to protect her companions during confrontations with powerful entities. One of her key physical traits is that she always wears gloves; these conceal a spiritual curse mark on her hand, a permanent remnant of the incident from her middle school days that she shares exclusively with Keitaro. Ultimately, Eiko is the manipulative bridge who keeps the trio united, using her wits and obsession to push forward their shared goal of capturing malevolent spirits against all odds.
