Description
Fū Hōōji is one of the three protagonists of the anime and manga series Magic Knight Rayearth. She is a fourteen-year-old student in the eighth grade who attends a private school for intellectually gifted girls. Her birthday is on December 12, and her blood type is A. In the real world, she is an exemplary student whose favorite subject is mathematics, while her least favorite is art. Outside of academics, she is a member of her school’s archery club and enjoys reading as a hobby; she also has a notable interest in computer programming and fantasy role-playing games. Her family consists of her parents and an older sister named Kuu.

In terms of appearance, Fū has short, light brown or blonde hair and green eyes, and she typically wears glasses, though these are not seen when she is in her full armor. Her magical element is wind, a fact reflected in the meaning of her given name. Her surname, Hōōji, incorporates the characters for phoenix and temple, which connects to her Rune God, the divine being Windom, who takes the form of a great green phoenix or a mecha with angelic wings.

Fū’s personality is defined by her calm, polite, and highly analytical nature. She is the most reserved member of the trio and often serves as the voice of reason and the group's strategist. Her courtesy is almost excessive; she addresses nearly everyone, including opponents, with respectful honorifics. However, beneath this gentle and unassuming exterior lies a sharp intellect and a surprisingly blunt and straightforward manner of speaking. She is known for stating the obvious in a humorous way and can be very direct with her observations, much to the chagrin of her more hot-headed friend, Umi. Despite her politeness, she possesses a determined and unyielding core. She is fiercely loyal and protective of her friends, valuing their safety above her own, and her compassion is considered her greatest strength in the world of Cephiro, where the power of one's heart is paramount.

Fū's primary motivation throughout the story is to protect her friends and complete the mission she has been given. Initially transported to the magical land of Cephiro alongside Hikaru Shidou and Umi Ryuuzaki, she accepts the duty of becoming a Magic Knight to rescue the kidnapped Princess Emeraude. Unlike Umi, who is eager to return home, or Hikaru, who enthusiastically embraces the role of a hero, Fū approaches the quest with a calm and logical mindset, treating it like the RPGs she enjoys while still committing herself fully to the cause. Her role in the group is that of a healer and support caster, with her wind magic focused on defense and recovery rather than pure offense. She is also a skilled archer, a talent she uses effectively in battle before acquiring her legendary weapon, the greatsword Escudo.

Key relationships are central to her development. She forms an unbreakable bond of friendship with Hikaru and Umi, built on mutual trust and a shared sense of purpose. Her most significant personal relationship is with a wandering swordsman named Ferio, whom the girls meet in the Forest of Silence. She develops strong romantic feelings for him, and he returns her affection. He gives her a keepsake—a ring in the manga and a jeweled orb in the anime—which becomes a treasured symbol of their connection. Over the course of the story, Fū undergoes considerable emotional development. The trio’s success in their initial quest comes at a great psychological cost, as they are forced to kill not Zagato, but the very princess they were meant to save, whose heart had faltered. This traumatic event deeply affects Fū; upon returning to Tokyo, she becomes visibly sadder, loses weight, and loses interest in her hobbies, as she can no longer see fictional villains as truly evil. When she is summoned back to Cephiro for a second quest, she must grapple with her guilt over these events, particularly in relation to Ferio, who is revealed to be Princess Emeraude’s younger brother. Her arc involves learning to cope with this trauma and reaffirming her compassionate yet strong will to save the crumbling world.

As the Magic Knight of Wind, Fū possesses several notable abilities. Her spells include Winds of Healing, which allows her to recover the injuries of herself or her allies. For defense, she can summon Guardian Wind, also known as Winds of Protection, to create a barrier, and for crowd control, she uses Binding Wind, or Winds of Admonishment, to immobilize enemies. Her primary offensive magic is the Emerald Typhoon, a powerful gust of wind that can blow away or cut through foes. Her ultimate power is her Rune God, Windom. This massive, sentient entity takes the form of a giant bird or an angelic mecha, which she pilots from a cockpit in its chest to fight on a colossal scale.
