Description
Nanaka Kotegawa is a supporting character who works as a diving instructor at the Grand Blue diving shop, which is owned by her father, Toshio Kotegawa. She is the older sister of Chisa Kotegawa and becomes the adoptive cousin of Iori Kitahara when he moves in to attend university. Nanaka has a background as a former member of the university's Peek a Boo diving and drinking club, a past that has left a lasting influence on her habits and relationships.

In terms of appearance, Nanaka is a young woman of notable beauty, standing 160 centimeters tall with waist-length brown hair, reddish-brown eyes, and a very voluptuous figure. When she is not working as an instructor, she is typically seen in casual clothing such as dresses. Her professional role makes her a prominent and attractive face for the family business, where she manages lessons and promotional activities.

Nanaka's personality is generally characterized as sweet, caring, and nurturing, often taking on a maternal role within her social group. She does not usually participate in the heavy drinking and wild parties common among the Peek a Boo members, preferring to observe from the sidelines. She shows a motherly concern for Iori Kitahara, cooking for him and scolding him when his partying becomes excessive.

However, this gentle demeanor masks an extreme and obsessive sister complex directed at her younger sister, Chisa. Nanaka's affection manifests in unusual ways, such as burying her face in and smelling Chisa's clothing, drinking from her sister's used glasses, and decorating her personal bedroom with numerous photos, posters, dolls, and other memorabilia of Chisa. This intense attachment is well-known among the other characters, though Chisa herself seems largely unaware of the extent of her sister's fixation.

This sister complex is the primary catalyst for a dramatic shift in Nanaka's behavior. While she is normally warm and composed, any suggestion or rumor that Iori might be romantically involved with Chisa causes her to become extremely hostile, frightening, and threatening, with a demeanor that can feel genuinely dangerous to those around her. In these moments, she sheds her sweet image entirely and has shown a willingness to resort to violence. Paradoxically, she has also demonstrated a capacity to become supportive of the idea of Iori and Chisa being together if she is convinced that their feelings are genuine and that it would lead to Chisa's happiness.

Nanaka's motivations are deeply rooted in her protectiveness over her sister, which is the central driving force behind her most extreme actions. Beyond this, she is also motivated by a desire to care for those she considers family or close friends, such as Iori, whom she sees as a little brother. Her own past as a member of the Peek a Boo club also influences her to be vigilant about the potential negative influence the club's rowdy culture might have on younger members like Iori. She also possesses a notable naivete regarding sexual matters, especially when she herself is the subject, leading her to panic and flee from awkward situations.

Her key relationships are defined by her familial connections and her friendships. Her bond with her sister Chisa is the most significant, marked by her overbearing adoration and protectiveness. With Iori Kitahara, she has a dualistic relationship, acting as a nurturing older sister figure under normal circumstances but turning into a jealous guardian when she fears for Chisa's romantic innocence. Nanaka shares a notably close and trusting friendship with Azusa Hamaoka, who is often the first person she calls for advice or to confide in when she is confused or worried about something, particularly concerning Iori's behavior. Her relationship with her father is not extensively explored beyond their professional connection, and she appears to have a more understanding attitude toward her mother, Sayaka, than Chisa does.

Throughout the story, Nanaka's development is subtle, as she largely maintains her core traits. The most notable evolution is the occasional softening of her stance towards Iori, where her initial hostility based on mere suspicion can give way to a more accepting attitude if she perceives a genuine and respectful connection between him and Chisa. Her role in the story is primarily as a supporting figure who provides maternal care, comedic relief through her extreme siscon tendencies, and a source of dramatic tension and intimidation, especially regarding the potential romance between Iori and Chisa.

In terms of notable abilities, Nanaka is a skilled and qualified diving instructor, demonstrating professional competence and a genuine love for the sport. Her most unique and notable "ability" is her capacity to project an overwhelmingly intimidating and frightening aura, a stark and powerful contrast to her usual gentle nature, which she can unleash when she feels her sister is threatened. This presence alone is often enough to make others back down or be extremely cautious around her.
