Description
Sumi Sakurasawa is a character from the Rent-A-Girlfriend series, known for her gentle nature and extreme shyness. She is a nineteen-year-old first-year student at Futaji Mizu Women's University, where she excels in the liberal arts and has a particular interest in Japanese history. Originally from Ibaraki Prefecture, she stands 156 centimeters tall and has soft, reddish-pink hair, which she usually styles with a small braid tied with a ribbon on the right side, and reddish-pink eyes. Her favorite color is pink.
Her most defining characteristic is her profound social anxiety and introverted personality. Sumi is extremely timid and has great difficulty speaking aloud, often communicating through gestures, facial expressions, and writing. Even when she does manage to speak, her voice is typically very soft and hesitant. Despite her quiet exterior, she is a kind and considerate person who genuinely wants to make others feel comfortable. She also possesses a strong, quiet determination; she tends to overanalyze situations, and much of her internal monologue involves worrying about potential negative outcomes. In contrast to her struggles with verbal conversation, she is much more expressive and talkative when communicating through text messages.
Sumi decided to become a rental girlfriend specifically to challenge herself and overcome her debilitating shyness. However, her inability to hold a conversation initially led to complaints from clients. Seeing her struggle, her senior and mentor, Chizuru Mizuhara, asked Kazuya Kinoshita to go on a series of practice dates with Sumi to help her gain confidence. During these practice dates, Kazuya's encouragement, including his words that a kind girl like her could surely succeed as a rental girlfriend, became a significant source of motivation for her. As she continues to meet with Kazuya, Sumi begins to develop unspoken romantic feelings for him. However, because of her shy nature and her awareness of his feelings for Chizuru, she does not actively try to pursue a relationship with him and instead finds contentment in their friendship.
Within the story, Sumi serves as a supporting character whose role highlights themes of personal growth and quiet support. She looks up to Chizuru as a role model and acts as a reliable and empathetic confidant, showing genuine concern for Chizuru's happiness as well. Her personal growth is a central focus, as she gradually begins to speak more openly and express herself better through her work. Her development is explored in even greater depth in her own spin-off manga series, Kanojo, Hitomishirimasu, where she is the protagonist. Sumi has several notable abilities that help her navigate her daily life. She practices calligraphy every morning, using it as a form of self-reflection by writing down her goals for the day. She is an excellent listener, and her kind and thoughtful gestures often make up for her lack of conversation during rental dates. She lives with her pet dog, Suzuri, whom she takes for a run every morning at 4 a.m.
