Description
Tōma Hashiba is one of the five young warriors known as the Samurai Troopers. He is the bearer of the Tenku (Heavens or Strata) armor, which grants him power over the element of air and embodies the virtue of Wisdom, sometimes interpreted as Life. Born on October 10, 1973, in Osaka Prefecture, Tōma is a Libra with AB blood type. He is a descendant of the famed historical warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which is a source of personal heritage and research interest for him.

Tōma is distinguished by his exceptional intellect, often cited as having an IQ of 250. This genius-level intelligence makes him the primary strategist of the group, allowing him to analyze situations, devise battle plans, and serve as a voice of reason to counter the more impulsive personalities of his teammates. His hobbies reflect his analytical nature, including strategy games like Go and shogi, solving puzzles, and computer simulations. He is also a master of kyudo, the Japanese martial art of archery, and has a keen interest in baseball, archaeology, and military history.

Tōma’s personality is shaped by a somewhat solitary upbringing. His father, Genichirō, is a university professor of physics and astronomy described as a "mad scientist," while his mother is an international journalist. They divorced when Tōma was twelve years old, leading to a childhood where he often ate alone and became highly self-reliant. This background contributed to his reserved, logical, and sometimes blunt demeanor. He can appear aloof or overly analytical, prioritizing logic over emotion in ways that occasionally cause friction with his friends. Despite this exterior, he possesses a fierce loyalty and a deep, protective care for his comrades, who are his first true friends. He also has notable personal quirks, including a voracious appetite that rivals his teammate Kento, a pronounced sweet tooth, and difficulty waking up early due to low blood pressure and late-night habits.

In the story, Tōma’s role is primarily that of a long-range combatant and tactical support. He wields a collapsible metal bow called the Shouhou Kyu, from which he can fire an endless supply of golden energy arrows. His signature special move is the Shin Ku Ha, or Vacuum Wave, which concentrates atmospheric energy into a devastating projectile. The Tenku armor also grants him the ability to fly and manipulate wind for attacks and defensive barriers. He discovered his armor at Amanohashidate, a famous scenic site in Japan, after following clues from his ancestral research with the help of his mother.

His key relationships within the group are particularly close with Seiji Date, with whom he shares intellectual interests and a more measured approach to battle. He often finds himself balancing the passionate and headstrong natures of Ryo Sanada and Kento Rei Fang. Over the course of the series and subsequent original video animations (OVAs) like Kikoutei Densetsu and Message, Tōma undergoes significant development. He evolves from a detached analyst who relies solely on logic into a warrior who learns to integrate his powerful emotions with his intellect. This growth is highlighted in his battles against the warlord Kayura, where he fights with newfound personal conviction, and in later stories where his desire to fully understand a situation before fighting stems from a hard-won understanding of the emotional costs of their mission. By the final OVAs, he has matured, balancing his scholarly pursuits with new interests like baseball, and his dedication to his friends has become the core motivation that tempers his formidable strategic mind.
