Description
Keroppe is a character from the anime Maebashi Witches, recognizable as a small, frog-like familiar who stands approximately 35 centimeters tall. His primary role in the story begins before the main events, as he is the one who recruits the five central girls to become apprentice witches. Once they have accepted their roles, he assigns them the mission of collecting magical energy by granting the wishes of customers who visit their shop.
In terms of personality, Keroppe is presented as a being of contradictions. While he consistently supports the five apprentices, he has a tendency to make excessive, unwelcome, and often sarcastic remarks. He possesses a notably mischievous and ironic demeanor. Furthermore, he has a habit of forgetting to explain crucial rules and information, only revealing them when someone specifically asks. This scatterbrained and talkative nature frequently leads to conflict with one of the witches, Azu Niisato, who often responds by stepping on him.
Keroppe maintains a strict policy of non-interference. He deliberately avoids providing more help than is strictly necessary, preferring to let the girls learn and solve problems on their own. He is also fiercely protective of their privacy, refusing to share any personal information about the individual members. However, this stance has a degree of flexibility. In one instance, when the witch Yuina Akagi inadvertently invaded the privacy of Choco Mitsumata, Keroppe showed consideration. He gently explained the reasons behind Choco's normally listless behavior and even used magic to help Yuina understand the other girl's struggles through direct experience.
Despite his role as a guide and supporter, Keroppe's loyalty is revealed to be completely neutral. When one of the group, Eiko Zen, betrays the other witches, Keroppe switches sides without hesitation. He aligns himself with Eiko and refuses to offer any assistance to Yuina and the others as they try to return to the shop. This action clarifies that his true position is not with any particular individual, but as a neutral party in their disputes.
Keroppe also demonstrates other notable abilities beyond basic magical support. He has the power to manipulate the system by which the witches operate, such as deducting points from the group when they misuse their magic or ask for too many direct tips. He can also use magic to create experiential lessons, pushing the girls to face difficulties firsthand as a way of fostering genuine understanding and growth.
