Description
Yuina Akagi is a fifteen-year-old first-year high school student who serves as the main protagonist of the story. She was born on March 30th and has O blood type. Yuina lives with her family above their manju sweet shop in Maebashi City, where she helps out and has developed a particular fondness for eating the steamed buns. She has a cheerful and sunny disposition, approaching life with an open-minded curiosity and a nearly boundless supply of positive energy. She tends to follow the latest trends with enthusiasm, though her knowledge of any given fad is usually only skin-deep. Her communication style is notably unique and can sometimes come across as blunt or confusing to others, but she rarely worries about what people think of her and remains sincere in all her interactions.
Yuina's greatest passion is photography. She is almost never seen without her instant camera, which she uses to obsessively document the world around her. Her ultimate dream is to capture what she calls the most emo or the most powerful photo possible, a snapshot that radiates maximum emotion and vibes. This desire for something more exciting in her otherwise normal life is what initially leads her to accept an offer from a talking frog-like familiar named Keroppe to become a witch. Her motivation is not driven by a grand sense of duty but rather by the simple, honest wish to find a little more magic and fun in her everyday existence.
As a witch-in-training, Yuina does not possess flashy or overt magical abilities. Instead, her true power lies in her personality. Her flat, open-minded way of viewing the world and her refusal to judge others allows her to connect with people on a genuine level. She has an instinctive knack for understanding the heart of a problem and, without even realizing she is doing it, her actions and words spark positive change in the lives of those around her. She is described as a childlike genius at releasing joy and encouragement, someone who runs on instinct rather than thought and generally gets things remarkably right. It is her clear and vibrant imagination, unburdened by anxiety, that gives form to the group's magical shop.
Yuina's role in the story is as the heart of the Maebashi Witches group. While the other members may be more skilled or driven in specific areas, her unpretentious and easygoing nature is what ultimately nudges them toward personal growth and helps the team come together. She has a particularly close bond with her mother, and the two enjoy going to karaoke together. Although she shares a good relationship with all the witches, her straightforward sincerity can sometimes cause friction, particularly with Azu Niisato, who often finds Yuina's unique way of speaking difficult to understand.
Yuina undergoes a subtle but significant personal journey. Initially, she had difficulty communicating with her peers and, despite being friendly, she had never invited anyone to her home before the events of the series. Her social circle was quite limited, and she tended to monopolize conversations, unintentionally causing awkwardness. However, through her magical training and her growing friendship with the other girls, she begins to open up. The other members of the Maebashi Witches become the first friends she ever invites into her room, marking a major milestone in her social development. Her story is one of self-discovery, showing how an unvarnished and authentic personality can quietly but powerfully reshape relationships and create a sense of belonging.
