Description
Bard Cornelius is the protagonist of the light novel and manga series. He is the eldest son of Ignis and Maggot Cornelius, making him the heir to the Cornelius County within the Mauricia Kingdom. His birth was considered extraordinary, as mages present determined he was born with multiple personalities, described as two extra souls residing within his own. These two additional souls are the reincarnated consciousnesses of two individuals from another world: Oka Sanai Sadatoshi, a veteran samurai and military strategist from the Sengoku period, and Oka Masaharu, a modern-day Japanese high school student and otaku with a fondness for kemonomimi, characters with animal ears.
Physically, Bard is described as having a slender build, which he develops through rigorous training from a young age. He possesses long silver or white hair that he typically ties in a ponytail, a trait he inherits from his mother, and blue eyes.
Bard’s personality is a direct reflection of the unique confluence of minds within him. His behavior and demeanor shift depending on which of the three souls is dominant at any given moment. When the samurai Sanai is in control, Bard becomes a grumpy, glory-seeking individual with a strong penchant for accumulating gold. If the otaku Masaharu takes the forefront, he exhibits an energetic and more impulsive personality, prone to enthusiastic outbursts. When his original self, sometimes referred to as Baldr, is in control, he presents what is considered his usual, balanced personality. This internal council of personalities drives his motivations, as he leverages Sanai's tactical brilliance and combat experience alongside Masaharu’s encyclopedic knowledge of modern technology and business practices to carve his own path and rise to power.
Bard’s primary motivation is to use the combined knowledge of his past lives to achieve success and independence. He begins by building his fortune through clever commercial ventures, such as creating an alternative sugar source from sugar beets and developing a gold-plating technique that produces high-quality goods at a fraction of the usual cost. His role in the story is that of a rising force who consistently outmaneuvers his rivals. He is sent on a diplomatic mission to the neighboring Kingdom of Sanjuan, where a succession crisis has erupted following the death of the king’s eldest son. There, he is tasked not only with sharing medical knowledge to combat cholera but also with helping to resolve the deadly political turmoil. His successes lead to him being granted the Antrim territory, making him a viscount and later a margrave, putting him on the front lines of a conflict with the Haurelia kingdom.
Key relationships significantly shape his journey. His mother, Maggot, is a formidable mercenary who subjects him to brutal and harsh training from childhood, forging his physical resilience. His father, Ignis, later arranges for him to enter the royal academy. At the academy, he befriends Silk Randolph and defeats Prince William in a duel, which leads to him being called upon to treat the royal princess for cholera. He also develops a relationship with the beastman Selina, who helps run his trading company, and is served by his maid, Seilurn. As the story progresses, he later becomes the king of the Trystovy Kingdom and the ruler of the beastman race, taking on the name Bard Trystovy.
Throughout the narrative, Bard undergoes significant development, evolving from a young nobleman using his unique abilities to conduct business to a major political and military leader. He transitions from being the heir of a county to a baron, then a viscount, a margrave, and finally a king. His experiences in the Sanjuan succession war and the defense of Antrim transform him from a merchant and inventor into a proven strategist and commander.
Bard possesses a vast array of notable abilities, almost all derived from the two souls sharing his mind. From the samurai Sanai, he gains expert spear and swordmanship, including the Hozuin-style spearmanship and Hayashizaki-style sword arts, and can unleash a powerful intimidating aura. He also learns grappling techniques and has a perfect memory. From the otaku Masaharu, he gains immense knowledge of modern science, allowing him to invent technologies such as water hand pumps, wheelbarrows, compasses, lightning rods, and treatments for scurvy and cholera. He also possesses extraordinary business acumen and leadership skills. In terms of magic, Bard can use body strengthening magic, earth magic, and a unique ability called King's Gate. King's Gate is an ability said to belong to the Beast King, but can be used by humans with mixed beastman blood. When unlocked, it grants him superhuman speed that rivals even his mother's. He can also use a spell called Over Boost, which greatly enhances his physical abilities for a short time at the cost of leaving him lethargic afterward.
