Kodō Iwamoto is the central protagonist of the story, a third-year student at Seihō Middle School during the 1910s. This institution is distinct in that it operates directly under the control of the military, with its primary function being the collection and research of supernatural phenomena for potential military application. As a key operative of the school, Iwamoto is frequently dispatched to various locations across Japan to investigate reports of paranormal activity.

In the course of his duties, he arrives at a village where an unusual event is taking place, the falling of black snow. It is there that he encounters a boy who possesses mysterious powers but views his own abilities as a curse or an illness. Where others see a affliction, Iwamoto recognizes a unique potential. He takes it upon himself to instruct the boy on how to properly use his powers, revealing that they share a particular connection. Following this, he provides the boy with a letter of recommendation to attend Seihō Middle School, offering him a path to understand and control his abilities as part of the school's investigations. This act of identifying and recruiting individuals with supernatural talents is a core part of Iwamoto's role. He leads a unit known as the "Pavilion of the Isolated," which is composed of students who possess these exceptional and sometimes magical-like abilities. Through his travels and encounters, Iwamoto guides others, showing them that their perceived curses can be a source of strength, while also carrying out the orders of the military hierarchy.
