Description
Franky, whose original name is Cutty Flam, is the shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates. Abandoned as a child by his pirate parents in the South Blue, he was rescued and taken in by Tom, a legendary shipwright from Water 7. Under Tom's tutelage, Franky learned the craft of shipbuilding alongside his brother figure, Iceburg. After a tragic incident where he was run over by the Sea Train while trying to protect Tom from the World Government, Franky was left severely injured. He survived by using scrap metal to rebuild his own body, transforming himself into a cola-powered cyborg. To hide his identity following these events, he abandoned his birth name and became known as Franky, eventually becoming the leader of a group of ship dismantlers and bounty hunters called the Franky Family in Water 7.
Franky possesses a flamboyant, strong-willed, and eccentric personality. He is an exhibitionist who proudly declares himself a pervert and has little regard for rules or social norms, often wearing nothing more than a swimsuit and an open Hawaiian shirt. His most famous catchphrase is "SUPER!" which he shouts while striking a distinctive pose with his arms locked together above his head. Despite his tough and aggressive exterior, Franky is deeply emotional and sentimental. He is prone to weeping openly upon hearing a sad or touching story, though he will violently deny that he is crying and may pull out a guitar to sing a song about the tale that moved him. He is highly self-aggrandizing and loves to show off his latest mechanical inventions and body modifications, which makes him particularly popular with the more childish members of the crew like Luffy, Chopper, and Usopp. His behavior can even change depending on what beverage is in his internal fridge; cola returns him to his normal boisterous self, while tea makes him act like a gentle old farmer, and vegetable juice makes him obsess over health.
Franky's primary motivation is his dream to build a magnificent ship that could circumnavigate the world and travel to the end of the Grand Line. This dream, instilled in him by his mentor Tom, drove him to construct the Thousand Sunny for the Straw Hat Pirates, using a rare and extremely durable wood called Adam Wood. He is fiercely proud of his creations and will not allow anyone to speak ill of them or cause them harm. He joined the Straw Hat crew to fulfill this dream, becoming the eighth member of Luffy's crew and serving as their official shipwright, responsible for maintaining and operating the Thousand Sunny.
In the story, Franky initially serves as a minor antagonist during the Water 7 arc, where his family robbed Usopp. However, he becomes a crucial ally during the Enies Lobby arc, where he helps the Straw Hats rescue Nico Robin from the World Government. During this incident, he burned the blueprints for the ancient weapon Pluton, which he had inherited, and was deeply moved by Luffy's determination to save his crewmate. After the events of Enies Lobby, he used the money he had stolen from the Straw Hats to buy the Adam Wood and built them the Thousand Sunny as a replacement for their destroyed ship, the Going Merry. He officially joined the crew at the request of his Franky Family subordinates, who wanted him to pursue his own dreams.
Franky shares a complex but deeply loyal bond with Iceburg, who gave him his nickname and is his only remaining link to their master Tom. Although they argue constantly and Iceburg once blamed Franky for the tragedy that befell Tom, they care deeply for each other. Franky also has a strong mature bond with Nico Robin, as both have tragic pasts involving being hunted by the World Government from a young age. He is seen as a protective "big brother" figure to the members of his Franky Family and a fun, robotic father figure to the younger Straw Hats. While he initially clashed with Luffy and Usopp, he has since earned their deep respect and friendship, working closely with Usopp to maintain the ship and its various gadgets.
Franky undergoes significant development from a cynical, self-loathing shipwright who swore off building ships to a proud and passionate member of the Straw Hat crew. His decision to build the Thousand Sunny marked a turning point, as he finally embraced Tom's teaching that a shipwright must be proud of his creations. After the two-year timeskip, Franky has further upgraded his body using technology he studied while stranded on Dr. Vegapunk's winter island. He can now change his hairstyle at will, his body is more heavily mechanized, and he has added powerful new weapons like a laser beam to his arsenal, as well as a giant piloted robot named General Franky.
As a cyborg, Franky possesses immense physical strength and a vast array of built-in weaponry. His body is fueled by cola, which he stores in a refrigerator inside his torso. His left arm houses a cannon and machine gun, while his right fist can be launched forward on a chain for punching attacks. He can also shoot fire from his mouth, fire projectiles from his fingers, and unleash a devastating blast of compressed air called the Coup de Vent. His most powerful attack, learned during the timeskip, is the Radical Beam, a laser technique. While his front side is heavily armored and resistant to damage, his back is a significant vulnerability, as he was unable to reach it to perform modifications himself. Despite his metal body, he is buoyant and an excellent swimmer.
