Description
Kenji Hagiwara is a character from the Detective Conan series who plays a significant role in the backstory of the franchise, particularly in relation to the upcoming film, Highway no Datenshi. He is the late younger brother of Chihaya Hagiwara, a member of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police and the leader of its motorcycle division, who is a central figure in that film. Kenji is a former member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's bomb disposal unit and was the partner and close friend of Jinpei Matsuda, another officer who appears in the movie's narrative alongside him.

Kenji's background is rooted in his decision to join the police force. His father was a mechanic, and though Kenji initially wished to follow that path, the family's shop went bankrupt. He chose a career in law enforcement with the practical reasoning that the police would never go out of business. He attended the police academy alongside Jinpei Matsuda, Rei Furuya, Hiromitsu Morofushi, and Wataru Date, and the group of five all graduated together. He was known to be popular with women during his academy days.

In terms of personality, Kenji is described as a carefree individual who often finds time for a joke, even in tense situations. He is a heavy smoker, and this habit is shown as part of his calm demeanor when facing dangerous assignments. Despite his laid-back attitude, he is dedicated to his work and prioritizes the safety of others, ensuring that other people can be saved before himself. His character is marked by a sense of selflessness and respect for his friends. He has a notable tendency to change the characteristics of an excuse to make it more acceptable, a trait that his friend Matsuda noted means he is not a liar, just someone who reframes the truth.

Physically, Kenji is of average height with a well-built, strong frame. He has long black hair and white skin. His abilities are well-suited to his role in the bomb squad. He is skilled at defusing explosives, performing the task quickly, though not as fast as his partner Matsuda. His performance at the police academy was exceptional, which led to his swift recruitment into the bomb disposal unit. He is also adept at donning and doffing his protective bomb suit more rapidly than the average person.

Kenji's role in the story is defined by his tragic death. He was killed seven years prior to the main timeline during the first in a series of bombings. The incident occurred in a residential building in Shinjuku, where he and other squad members were called to defuse a bomb. While waiting for the evacuation to complete, he lit a cigarette. After analyzing the device, he estimated it would take a bit more than three minutes to defuse. However, when he began the process, the timer unexpectedly started again, leaving only six seconds before detonation. He and several other squad members were unable to escape and died in the explosion. His death had a profound impact on his partner, Jinpei Matsuda, who was on the phone with him at the time and who would later be killed by the same bomber four years later.

The character's key relationships are primarily with his fellow police academy graduates. His bond with Jinpei Matsuda is the most significant, as they were close friends and partners who did missions together. Even after Kenji's death, Matsuda continued to send emails to his account. He also maintained strong friendships with Rei Furuya, Wataru Date, and Hiromitsu Morofushi, all of whom he trained with and graduated alongside. Beyond his friends, his relationship with his older sister, Chihaya, is central to the narrative of Highway no Datenshi, as her story involves coming to terms with his loss.

Development of Kenji's character occurs largely through flashbacks, as he is deceased before the main series begins. His appearances are used to provide emotional depth and context to the actions and motivations of living characters, particularly his sister and his former classmates. In the Wild Police Story manga, which focuses on his academy days, his character is explored in more depth, showing his driving skills, which were noted by the series creator to be the best, and his passion for cars, with the Mazda RX-7 FD3S being his favorite. Despite being introduced in the manga in volume 36, his face was not fully shown until over sixty volumes later, though the anime depicted him earlier.
