Description
Kakeru Sorano is the male protagonist of this story, a first-year university student whose life is defined by a deep-seated withdrawal from the world around him. He is characterized by a shy and introverted nature, deliberately avoiding social interactions and keeping others at a distance. This self-imposed isolation is rooted in emotional trauma from a past incident involving human relationships, which has left him deeply wary of forming close connections. At the outset, he is a young man who has effectively shut himself off from life, appearing to have given up on truly experiencing it.
Kakeru’s motivations are not born from grand ambition but from a quiet, gradual awakening. Initially reluctant and passive, he is often pushed out of his comfort zone by external forces, most notably his dormmate, who drags him to a welcome party for new students. His life begins to shift when he meets Koharu Fuyutsuki, a blind classmate whose outlook is the polar opposite of his own. Where Kakeru sees reasons to retreat, Koharu finds reasons to engage with the world. This contrast becomes the catalyst for his change. He starts by performing small acts of kindness, such as picking up her dropped white cane, which leads to him assisting her with her coursework. This practical support evolves into a deeper, personal motivation: he decides to help Koharu fulfill one of her life's dreams, which is to launch fireworks. This goal, seemingly simple, represents a significant step for Kakeru, as it forces him to confront his fears and actively move forward for the sake of another person.
In the story's framework, Kakeru serves as the closed-off counterpart to Koharu's open and optimistic nature. His role is that of a man learning to see the light in his own life by helping someone who cannot see physically. His key relationships are few but profoundly impactful. The most significant is, of course, with Koharu Fuyutsuki. He is drawn to her brightness and positivity, while she is attracted to him because he treats her naturally, without the special consideration or pity she often receives due to her blindness. Another important relationship is with Ushio Narumi, his dormmate, who acts as a foil by being outgoing and persistent, frequently pulling Kakeru into social situations he would otherwise avoid.
Kakeru’s development arc is central to the narrative. He begins as a traumatized individual who has avoided deep relationships, but through his interactions with Koharu, he gradually starts to change. He moves from reluctant participation to proactive commitment, as seen in his decision to make her dream a reality. This journey is about him learning to trust again, to find purpose in connection, and to confront the emotional walls he has built around himself. He does not possess any supernatural or notable physical abilities. His strengths are entirely internal and relational: his capacity for quiet kindness, his growing determination, and his willingness to support someone else, which in turn becomes the very thing that saves him from his own isolation.
