Description
Kōtarō Takebayashi is a student in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, identifiable by his black hair combed over the sides of his head and his round, wire-framed glasses. He is assigned the class number E-14 and has a birthday on January 29th. His family comes from an elite and wealthy background, having run a hospital for generations, and his two older brothers are both enrolled in the medical department at the University of Tokyo. This legacy places immense pressure on Takebayashi to succeed, and his placement in the disadvantaged Class 3-E leads him to be considered the outcast of his family, fueling a strong, underlying desire for their recognition and approval.

In terms of personality, Takebayashi is generally a quiet and reserved individual, often making him seem inconspicuous. However, this quiet exterior masks an eccentric and somewhat oddball nature, and he is known among his classmates for his unique, otaku-centric values. He is deeply passionate about anime and two-dimensional characters, even going so far as to declare that a girl is not a true girl until she loses the third dimension. This love extends to a hobby of frequenting maid cafes, an interest he is known for evangelizing to others. While initially ashamed of being in Class 3-E and intending to leave, his experiences with his caring classmates and their teacher lead him to change his perspective.

Takebayashi's role in the class is that of an analyst and a technical expert. While his skills in frontline combat are noted to be low, he excels at analyzing situations and possesses a sharp, data-driven mind for statistics, risk management, and observation. He is also the class's most proficient demolition expert, capable of easily memorizing and effectively utilizing explosives, a skill set that becomes crucial in various missions. Academically, he is quite strong, particularly in the sciences, and his grades saw a dramatic improvement after receiving advice to use anime songs as a memorization tool. He achieved the seventh-highest score in the grade during the first semester finals and the fifth-highest during the second semester finals.

Takebayashi's key relationships include his friendship with Ryoma Terasaka, whom he introduced to maid cafes, leading to a close bond. He also frequently collaborates with Manami Okuda, as they share similar interests and temperaments, often teaming up to care for sick classmates or conduct research. He harbors a sense of admiration for the talented Gakushu Asano, while also pitying him for being trapped under his father's control.

His character undergoes significant development, most notably during a period when he temporarily transfers to the main campus's Class A. Manipulated by the chairman's offer, he leaves Class 3-E, believing that earning his family's recognition is more important than saving the world. However, after his former classmates come to check on him out of genuine concern, he has a change of heart. Publicly confessing his true feelings and deliberately destroying a shield, he returns to Class 3-E, thereafter volunteering to take on the role of the class's explosives handler and becoming more engaged in assassination activities. Years after the story's conclusion, Takebayashi pursues a career in the medical field, becoming a researcher who works alongside Okuda to develop artificial blood based on the legacy of their former teacher.
